(iv) IsTOTICE. The following Catalogue of the Alumni of the Departments of Arts and Science of the University of Pennsylvania has been prepared by a Committee of the Society of the Alumni. No general Catalogue of the Graduates in the Arts has been issued since that published by the Alumni in 1849. The Scientific Department (now known as The Towne Scientific School) was established a few years ago, and its graduates are included herein. - In the compilation of the present Catalogue recourse has been had to the minutes of the Trustees from the earliest date, and to other original sources, by the Com- mittee, whose earnest wish and endeavor it has been to approach as nearly as possible to accuracy in the lists of names of officers and graduates of their Alma Mater. The Circulars which from time to time have been addressed to the Alumni have not, however, met with such general response as was hoped for. Necessarily, there- fore, much of the information intended to be published in connection with the names of the graduates cannot be given. The Managers of the Society have concluded to have the work stereotyped, so that successive future editions may be published at a comparatively small expense. It is earnestly requested that all graduates and other friends of the University who may have the opportunity will carefully note any inaccuracies or deficiencies in this edition, and send information thereof, and of any other matters of interest regarding any of the graduates, directed to "The Corresponding Secretary of the Society of the Alumni, Department of Arts, University of Pennsylvania, West Philadelphia."
