Wicklow, in an agricultural grassland landscape. Much of this site is dominated by beech (Fagus sylvatica) and sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) and is infested with Prunus laurocerasus. Other parts are more native and the canopy here contains ash (Fraxinus excelsior), birch (Betula pubescens) and hazel (Corylus avellana). Circaea lutetiana, Oxalis acetosella, Dryopteris dilatata and Dryopteris filix-mas are found in the field layer. There is evidence of grazing by deer and cattle. Site no. 0988 FIPS no. There is very little wet woodland within the site with only a small strip of alder (Alnus glutinosa) bordering the river. The field layer of the site is dominated by bramble (Rubus fruticosus) and there are a few box (Buxus sempervirens) and snowberry (Symphoricarpos albus) plants towards the edge of the site. Wicklow, in a river valley which was presumably much more wooded in the past. Some nearby areas (see 6" map) have been planted recently (conifers, willows, etc.). The woodland is dominated by ash (Fraxinus excelsior), with Acer pseudacorus being frequent. There are also areas with much grey willow (Salix cinerea) and alder (Alnus glutinosa), particularly along the many streams that flow in the woodland. The streams rise from springs on the higher ground at the north of the site. There would appear to be tufa formation along many of these. Ground flora is very varied, with abundant Hedera helix, Rubus fruticosus agg., Polystichum setiferum, Viola sp., Ajuga reptans, etc. Wetter areas hold Filipendula ulmaria, Mentha aquatica and Carex remota. This woodland appears undisturbed (no paths, little evidence of grazers) and may be important if the presence of tufa springs is confirmed. The nearby landfill (appears to be for construction waste) has expanded considerably in the past 5 years (evident from aerial photo taken in 2000). It is not known if the woodland is under any sort of threat from this. The uncommon fern, Ophioglossum vulgatum, was found at the site. Site no. 0992 FIPS no. Ground flora is fairly typical of hazel-dominated WN2 oak-ash-hazel woodland, with Allium ursinum, Hedera helix, Sanicula europaeus, Carex remota, Geum urbanum, Oxalis acetosella and also with abundant ferns (e.g. Polystichum setiferum and Dryopteris spp.). A thin area of woodland/hedgerow stretches seawards, and a small area of woodland (no longer connected to main woodland) exists to the east. This latter area was not surveyed (see 6" map). The woodland is on a slight slope with alder dominant at the top of the site and willow dominant at the bottom. To the east of the site there is a small conifer plantation that alder has invaded (this was partially included in the survey see map). The west of the site borders diverse sedge rich wet grassland. Iron rich springs are found throughout the site. The conifers were planted in 1999. Wicklow, on a very steep slope. The woodland is dominated by hazel (Corylus avellana), with ash (Fraxinus excelsior) being frequent on the lower slope, and birch (Betula pubescens) at the upper parts of the slope. A number of mature sessile oak (Quercus petraea) trees exist, along with a number which have fallen over. Other trees present are grey willow (Salix cinerea), rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) and holly (Ilex aquifolium), but none are frequent.
