TPS Professional Development Activity Template Debra Pope Johnson Southside Middle School; Dougherty County School System, Albany, GA September 2016 Title of 1976 and 2016 Presidential Campaigns: Democrats and Republicans from the Convention Activity Speeches (40 years later are issues eerily the same or vastly different?) Overview Teachers will participate in Professional Development that will allow them to create an election resource packet that will allow students to compare and contrast presidential election Convention Speeches from both the Democrat and Republican contenders for the years 1976 and 2016. In the last 40 years, the presidents of the United States have had some long and arduous terms. They have had to deal with everything from war to economic failure. Some of the most prolific events ever, happened during the terms of these presidents. The 1976 contest was between Georgia’s own Democrat Jimmy Carter and Republican Gerald R. Ford. The 2016 contest is a contentious pairing of Democrat Hillary R. Clinton and Republican Donald Trump. What did these speeches tell about the current state of affairs in the United States during the respective time periods? Investigative Democrats and Republican contenders make Convention Speeches when they accepted their Question party’s nomination for president; 40 years later are issues eerily the same or vastly different? Audience This activity is best suited for educators of grades 6-12 This activity is best suited for educators in these content areas Social Studies/ Social Sciences Georgia History American Government U. S. History Time Required One two-hour session Goal Teachers will receive primary source documents of the speeches given by Democrats and Republicans at their parties Convention in 1976 and 2016. Although 40 years separate these speeches by the contenders for President are issues eerily the same or vastly different? Georgia Performance Standards SS8H12 The student will explain the importance of significant social, economic, and political developments in Georgia since 1970. SS8H12b Describe the role of Jimmy Carter in Georgia as state senator, governor, president, and past president. Objectives By the end of this PD Activity, participants will be able to: Access teaching tools and primary sources from loc.gov/teachers. Identify key considerations for selecting primary sources for instructional use (for example, student needs and interests, teaching s, etc.). Access primary sources and teaching resources from loc.gov for instructional use. Analyze primary sources in different formats. Analyze a set of related primary sources in order to identify multiple perspectives. Facilitate a primary source analysis using Library of Congress tools. Demonstrate how primary sources can support at least one teaching strategy (e.g., literacy, inquiry-based learning, historical thinking, etc.). Create primary source-based activities that help students engage in learning, develop critical thinking skills and construct knowledge. The other teacher should be assigned the Republican speech for 1976 and the Republican speech for 2016. There are usually two Teachers per school. Each teacher will outline important points in each of the candidates speeches for their respective years on chart paper utilizing the Teachers Guide for Analyzing Primary Sources by the Library of Congress http://www.loc.gov/teachers/usingprimarysources/resources/Analyzing_Primary_Sour ces.pdf there is an additional document analysis form at: http://www.archives.gov/education/lessons/worksheets/written_document_analysis_ worksheet.pdf that teachers can use from the national archives site that teachers may use and bring to the professional development session. Procedure 1. Before teachers report place signs on the walls with the two years 1976 and 2016 and Republican and Democrat. a. Teachers are to place their posters on the wall under their respective dates and party affiliation. b. What was done before the professional development is what we call the jigsaw strategy. Where different documents have been distributed to students/teachers for them to analyze and synthesize information from their reading 2. Teachers will participate in a gallery walk upon arrival and posting of the charts. a. Teachers will note variations/additions to what they have written. 3. Teachers will be given 20 minutes to allow writers to cite evidence in the speeches that allowed them to reach their conclusions. Which will allow them to create the thesis sentences for their papers. 4. Each Group of two teachers will select an editor who will type the paper for the group for submission and discussion at the end of the professional development. 5. Teachers will upload papers to professional development website for viewing and completion of the requirements for the professional development. Page 3 of 42 6. Additionally I have attached word clouds for each of the speeches and an additional activity could be that they guess which political contenders speech is in the word cloud.
