Windhuk of Hamburg. As built, she could carry 152 first class and 338 tourist passengers with a crew of 263. It was likely usable capacity was slightly higher during peak demand. On November 16, 1939, she departed Lobito, Portuguese West Africa in a futile attempt to reach Germany having been “ marooned “ in port for 79 days because of the outbreak of war. With the German Panzer Schiff ( pocket battleship ) Admiral Graf Spee wrecking havoc in the South Atlantic Ocean as a raider, she too became a hunted quarry by the Royal Navy’s Force H from Cape Town, South Africa. The composition of this group included the heavy cruisers H.M.S. Shropshire ( 83 ) and H.M.S. Sussex ( 96 ). In an attempt to evade detection, she masqueraded as the Japanese Osaka Shosen Kaisha liner " SANTOS MARU ", who, frequented the region. - By moving West by South, away from Germany, this would prove to be a successful tactic as the ship and crew took refuge at neutral Santos - Sao Paula, Brazil on December 7, 1939. Interned on January 3, 1940, she was later confiscated by Brazilian authorities. Before being removed in January of 1942, the former crew heavily sabotaged and damaged the ship's machinery. Purchased from Companhia de Navegacao Lloyd Brasileiro, a Brazilian government controlled company, for $ 4,000,000.00 and towed to Rio de Janeiro, temporary repairs ( $ 654,000.00, engines excluded. ) were effected and the ship was ferried to Norfolk, Virginia by May 27, 1943. Upon a complete refit as a troop transport with a capacity of 4,666, the U.S.S. Lejeune was commissioned into FULL service on April 15, 1944. Dated December 31, 1944, the muster roll showed 47 officers and 496 navy personnel on board. (108) ( Captain Laurence Edward Kelly, commander of the U.S.S.
