The purpose of the supplement is to make it easy to understand the structure of the ISBD and to improve efficiency in the practical application of the preliminary consolidated edition of the ISBD. This first issue of the supplement is designated as a preliminary edition. The ISBD Review Group did not want to further delay the publication to replace the general material designation in the examples with the new Area 0 for Content Form and Media Type that was approved in June 2009. After a revised version of the consolidated ISBD is released, these examples will be updated to reflect those changes. During the meeting of the ISBD Review Group at the 2007 World Library and Information Congress in Durban, South Africa, it was agreed to create the supplement after listening to the opinions of people from many sectors of the cataloguing community. In November 2007, the submission guidelines for ISBD examples were distributed to people who would provide examples. The guidelines included an explanation of how to create examples and some model examples. Many contributors participated in this project to compile various examples in a variety of languages for this supplement. Some of the individuals were from the IFLA Cataloguing Section Standing Committee and/or the ISBD Review Group (see the list of example contributors). The others were other IFLA section members and participants in the IFLA Meetings of Experts on an International Cataloguing Code. The contributors submitted the examples in the languages used in their countries so that more than 200 examples cover the following languages of cataloguing: Arabic, Chinese, Croatian, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish. From May to October 2008, all examples received were uploaded to the ISBD RG wiki. Many comments were made. Examples were corrected in line with those comments, and some questions remained for ambiguous comments. The corrected examples were sent to each provider and then modified again. After this process, the ISBD RG reviewed and approved the examples. During all these processes, many comments helped to make the current ISBD more efficient and practical, and made us aware of the importance of examples. As a result of these efforts, the supplement is being published only on the IFLA Web site because in the forthcoming consolidated ISBD, the general material designation (GMD) will be replaced by a new “content/medium” structure. When the new structure is released, the examples also will be revised to take the changes into account. 4 Full ISBD Examples October 2009 The examples will contribute to increasing the consistency of cataloguing among different countries. The work of this supplement was accomplished by contributions and cooperation from contributors of the examples and the ISBD Review Group members.
