In addition to digitising films, nine out of the 21 archives in the consortium set out to also digitise 5’600 photos, posters, programmes and journals and give online access to them via the European Film Gateway and Europeana. The digitisation of both film and film-related content was carried out by the archives individually and according to their own preferences. The DoW foresaw that film should be digitised in high resolution of at least HD, ideally 2K. The non-AV material, too, was supposed to be digitised in high quality. The high resolution versions should then be downsised for publication on the internet. This report describes the progress in film digitisation and gives detailed insight in the nature of the films digitised. It also includes the full list of titles digitised in the project. To find out more about the digital workflow and how the content was selected and prepared for the European Film Gateway and Europeana, please refer to D1.2 “First digitisation progress report to the Commission” 1. To monitor the progress in film digitisation, WP1 leader Det Danske Filminstitut set up templates for digitisation lists for all partners in the beginning of the project. All archives contributing to EFG1914 were asked to fill in these templates and to update the lists in quarterly intervals. All numbers, graphs and tables provided in this report are based on the indications made by the partners in the digitisation lists by the end of the project. The lists shows that by the end of the project, all archives in the consortium had digitised a total of 2’591 film titles with a total duration of 701 hours. This means the amount of hours made viewable on europeanfilmgateway.eu and Europeana.eu exceeds the goal of having to digitise 665 hours of film as mentioned in the DoW. In addition to the content they digitised for EFG1914, project partner Imperial War Museums has made available and extra of 38 hours to the project, which they had digitised already before the project. Further material from four archives outside the consortium could also be included and made available via EFG. The total amount of film titles related to World War One now available on EFG amounts to 2’833 titles and 740 hours that are now viewable free-of-charge online. By end of April 2014 this number is expected to rise even further. In total EFG1914 will be able to make available 755 hours of digitised content by then. In addition to the AV material, nine archives in the consortium digitised 6’185 nonAV objects of which 5’601 are available on the European Film Gateway. The remaining nonAV objects will be made available online by end of April latest, so that the goal of 5’600 nonAV objects is 1 http://project.efg1914.eu/wp- content/uploads/2013/03/EFG1914_D1_2_Digitisation_progress_report_to_the_Commission.pdf 4 not only met, but will also be exceeded. Details on the digitisation progress and the content are available in D5.1 “Report on type and quantity of non-film material digitised”. 2 Objectives Year 2 In the beginning of the project all archives in the consortium compiled detailed lists containing information on the content that they found applicable for the EFG1914 project. As stated in the DOW, content relevant to the project consisted of either films produced in the war years or else films from other periods of time that have a clear reference to the First World War or deal with the effects of the war. Both, non-fiction and fiction films were considered to be of relevance. Information on the selected films was collected via the online project management tool smartsheet.com that was also used to conclude and sum up the results by the end of the second project year. More details on how smartsheet was used within the project can be found in D1.2.
