SAMMY Program FINAL:Program

performances at the OLD GLOBE THEATRE OCTOBER 2009 Welcome UPCOMING Dear Friends, Leslie Bricusse and I first met T H E SAVA N N A H about eighteen months ago and DISPUTATION we began to look for a project Sept. 26 - Nov. 1, 2009 that we could do together at The The Old Globe Arena Stage Old Globe. After discussing at the James S. Copley several possibilities, he asked me Auditorium, to read his new musical about the San Diego Museum of Art life of Sammy Davis, Jr. I thought the work was both entertaining and important. Quite simply, the ❖❖❖ opportunity to produce this show with its great score and tell the DR. SEUSS’ story of this legendary American HOW THE GRINCH STOLE entertainer was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up. CHRISTMAS! Sammy is a very personal project for Leslie. His friendship with Sammy Nov. 21 - Dec. 27, 2009 began in 1961 and was both intensely personal and artistically prolific. Old Globe Theatre In fact, Leslie contributed more songs to Sammy’s canon of hits than any other individual songwriter. Many of these great songs, which ❖❖❖ brilliantly illuminate Sammy and the times in which he lived, are in this new score. WHISPER HOUSE Revealing Sammy is no small feat. There is so much more to Sammy Jan. 13 - Feb. 21, 2010 Davis, Jr. than his mythic stage persona. In addition to being one of the Old Globe Theatre greatest performers of his generation he was a very complicated man who struggled with issues of identity, race, relationships, money and fame. His journey wasn’t easy but it paved the way for many, many ❖❖❖ others. We're fortunate to have Obba Babatundé as our guide on this journey. LOST IN YONKERS Obba had a personal relationship with Sammy and this bond between Jan. 23 - Feb. 28, 2010 performers of different generations informs Obba's remarkable Sheryl and Harvey performance. Sammy was a triple threat performer and so is Obba. White Theatre It is a privilege to bring the magic of Sammy Davis, Jr. to those who knew and loved him, and particularly exciting to introduce this “once in ❖❖❖ a lifetime” performer to an entirely new generation of theatergoers. More than anything, as Sammy’s spirit fills the theater tonight, I hope BOEING-BOEING we make him proud. March 13 - April 18, 2010 Old Globe Theatre Louis G.
