While some claim it evolved from the Martinez - a concoction of gin, sweet vermouth, lemon and Maraschino - others argue it simply derives from the fortified wine brand itself. Most commonly reported as being realised in 1919 in Florence, Italy as a way to give the Americano - Campari, sweet vermouth and soda - a boozier kick. Broody and bitter, this simple 1:1:1 ratio drink should be approached with reverence. A slow sipper to be appreciated for the purity and harmony of its ingredients. GIMLET ........................................................£7.50 Plymouth Gin & lime cordial. From 1867 onwards, all British Naval ships were required to carry rations of fresh lime juice to prevent scurvy. The only issue was – it spoiled, fast. Around that time Launchlin Rose patented a way to preserve the juices without alcohol – and Rose’s Lime Cordial was born. The Naval Officers, though, liked their health kick with a heavy dose of gin.
