I joined the Corps of Royal Engineers (CRE), reporting for duty at Old Park Barracks, Dover on 12th January 1960. I was a Junior Leader!!!! No further comment on that, and it was like being at College or University with one exception - one compulsory subject was Military History. Specifically, the history of the CRE, and it was there I learnt that the CRE had reached the final of the very first FA Challenge Cup in 1872, and in 1875 at their 3rd final they only went and won it, beating Tuesday 16th March 1875: Old Etonians 2-0 in a replay after drawing the Kennington Oval first encounter 1-1! Royal Engineers 2 Old Etonians 0 They appeared in one more final, in 1878, losing 3-1 to Wanderers and played in the competition until 1886, when the competition opened up and Qualifying rounds were introduced. Most of the early cup finals were played at the Kennington Oval, better known these days as The Oval (or sponsored name, the Kia Oval) and until Wembley Stadium was built in 1923 the Final had various homes. Exceptions to those early Oval finals were in 1873 when it was played at Lillie Bridge in Fulham and 1893 at Fallowfields in Manchester.
