Weekend Fly-In: Dayton, OH (KMGY) August 25‐28, 2016 Watch out! SEBS will exceed the limits of our southern boundaries and invade the Midwest region! After multiple requests, we will head back to Dayton, OH, the Birthplace of Aviation! Our last visit was in 2005 and much has happened since then including the National Museum of the US Air Force opening a new fourth hangar this June! We will visit the National Museum of the US Air Force as well as four of the five National Historic Landmarks within the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park including the Wright Cycle Company building, Hoover Block, Huffman Prairie Flying Field, 1905 Wright Flyer III, and Hawthorn Hill! Since we are going out of bounds, we are also changing logistics! The most important change is that we are hiring a charter bus for transportation (no 15 passenger vans). Also, with this fly‐in being in the summer and most attendees historically arriving early to beat afternoon buildups and thunderstorms, we are planning Thursday activities which are optional. For Thursday arrivals, there will be three bus shuttles from the airport to the hotel occurring at 11:30 am, 1:00 pm, and 5:00 pm. For those of you that want to participate in the Thursday activities, you should plan to arrive in time to secure your aircraft and catch the 1:00 pm shuttle. For any early arrivals prior to Thursday, we will have a bus that will depart the hotel at 10:30 am for the airport, so that you can tour the Wright “B” Flyer hangar and museum (see below). Our designated airport is KMGY (Dayton‐Wright Brothers). The FBO, Commander Aero, took excellent care of SEBS attendees at the 2005 fly‐in, so we will head back to honor John Bosch, Chairman and CEO, and his team! All parking and overnight fees are waived, and Commander Aero will offer a 10 cent discount on fuel. If you have any questions or would like a rental car, contact Commander Aero at (937) 885‐5580. Our hotel is the Crowne Plaza Dayton, and it is within walking distance to attractions, dining and nightlife in downtown Dayton including the Oregon Arts District, America's Packard Museum, International Peace Museum, and 2nd Street Market. The rate is $124 / night plus taxes for a Double Queen or King room and includes breakfast for two. We have 25 rooms in our block to start. The rate is available 3 days prior and after our event. To make reservations for dates of the event only, you can call Central Reservations at (800) 689‐5586 and use the group code BON. You may also make the reservations online at http://www.cpdayton.com/ using the group code BON. For extended stay reservations, you must call the Sales Office at (937) 229‐9835 Monday – Friday from 8 am – 5 pm to make your reservation. All reservations should be made by Monday, July 25th to receive the discounted rate. Upon arrival optional box lunches will be available from Dorothy Lane Market at the FBO that you will pre‐order during registration. Then you may want to immediately begin your exploration of the Birthplace of Aviation! Next door to the FBO is the Wright “B” Flyer’s hangar and museum which houses a flyable replica of the world’s first mass‐produced aircraft, the 1911 Wright B Flyer. The replica was built by a group of local aviation enthusiasts, and the airplane is housed in a hangar that is similar to the Wright brothers’ 1910 hangar at Huffman Prairie Flying Field. You can browse the historical displays to learn how the Wright Company built the Page 1 of 4 Dayton, OH Fly‐in (KMGY) August 25‐28, 2016 original Wright “B” Flyers in Dayton. You may also schedule a short ride for $100 donation, but an early morning reservation may be needed to avoid high temperatures and density altitude conditions. The staff recommends 20 – 30 minutes to tour the site, and the museum is open until 2:30 pm. Thursday afternoon we will go to the Huffman Prairie Flying Field, a National Historic Landmark. Our first stop will be at the Interpretive Center where exhibits focus on the Wright Brothers’ experimental flights at Huffman Prairie Flying Field and on The Wright Company’s flying school at Huffman Prairie. In addition, there are exhibits on aviation technology at Wright‐Patterson Air Force base. Our second stop will be at the Huffman Prairie Flying Field itself. Attractions include a replica of the Wrights’ 1905 hangar, a replica of the catapult system they used to launch their early airplanes and interpretive signs erected by the National Park Service. We will return to the hotel for some rest, relaxation and hospitality! For Thursday dinner, we have reserved the private dining room at Coco’s Bistro. The restaurant describes itself as “modern American comfort food with a twist”. We will have a limited menu of 4 – 5 items, and your meal will be on individual checks/couple checks. (The menu will be posted on our web site.) On Friday we will begin our day at the Wright‐Dunbar Interpretive Center and Aviation Trail Visitor Center. This site is the home of two National Historic Landmarks, the Hoover Block and the Wright Cycle Company Building. Wilbur and Orville Wright had a printing business from 1890 ‐ 1895. One of their associates in the printing business was Paul Laurence Dunbar, a friend of the Wrights and later an internationally known black poet. The name of the interpretive center reflects this special relationship. Exhibits tell about the lives of the three men and about the West Side neighborhood. In addition, a special exhibit is currently on display, The Photography of Wilbur and Orville Wright, 1897‐1900. Across the plaza from the Interpretive Center is the Wright Cycle Company Building which is one of only two original Wright brothers buildings still standing at their original locations in the West Side neighborhood where Wilbur and Orville lived, worked and invented the airplane. The Wright brothers occupied the building from 1895 to 1897, manufacturing bicycles on the first floor and operating a job printing business on the second floor. During this period, Wilbur and Orville also took their first steps on the road to inventing the airplane, their Flyer I, in 1903. For lunch, we will go to the Engineers Club of Dayton. Orville Wright ate lunch here nearly every day, and we may get a glimpse of his table! The Engineers Club also has the original Wright engine number three and a turbo jet engine on display. We will enjoy a buffet lunch of sandwich trays, salad, fruit, chips and cookies. Page 2 of 4 Dayton, OH Fly‐in (KMGY) August 25‐28, 2016 After lunch we will head to Carillon Historical Park for guided tours of Hawthorn Hill, the Oakwood mansion that Orville Wright called home for nearly 35 years, and that also has a long and colorful history of hosting distinguished visitors such as Charles A. Lindbergh and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt! Hawthorn Hill, a National Historic Landmark, is an impressive home with 1900s original furnishings, and it also features Orville Wright’s original study! We will divide into groups and Dayton History will transport groups to the Hawthorn Hill home site for tours. When you are not touring Hawthorn Hill, you will be in Carillon Historical Park exploring on your own the John W. Berry, Sr. Wright Brothers Aviation Center. You will see the original 1905 Wright Flyer II, a National Historic Landmark. Orville Wright donated this plane and oversaw the exhibit design and installation. Also on view are an original Wright Brothers’ Van Cleve bicycle and the camera that took the iconic photograph capturing the first successful flight over Kitty Hawk. We will return to the hotel for much needed rest and relaxation after a day of touring. Hospitality will be open for reminiscing over the marvels experienced that day! Friday dinner will be on your own at one of the many restaurants within walking distance or you can stay in and order room service! On Saturday we will spend the day at the National Museum of the US Air Force. A new fourth building will be open and host more than 70 aircraft in four new galleries ‐‐ Presidential, Research & Development, Space and Global Reach. You can board a space shuttle, walk through four presidential aircraft, look inside cargo planes, and more! We will arrive by 10 am, and you will explore the museum at your own pace. We will have an early bus departure at 1:30 pm for those wanting to return to the hotel. The final bus departure will be at 4:00 pm. Some of you may want to participate in one of the free guided tours of the museum available to the general public at 10:30 am or 1:30 p.m. All tours begin at the entrance to the Early Years Gallery (through the Museum Store and turn right) and advance registration is not necessary. Some of you may want to experience the museum’s state‐of‐the‐art Cinema to view a 3D film on a massive 80 foot by 60 foot screen ‐ the largest in all of southwest Ohio! Check out available movies and schedule at http://www.afmuseum.com/attractions/theatre. Some adventurous souls may want to experience the flight simulators available. See http://www.afmuseum.com/attractions/simulators for more information. Lunch is on your own at the museum café. We will return to the hotel for some rest and relaxation before the last function of the weekend, the Saturday Night Banquet! We will have cocktail hour followed by a buffet dinner.
