MIN. BID JUNE RARE SOUL AUCTION & A BILLY DAVIS STANKY (GET FUNKY) COBBLESTONE 731 M- 150 Has emerged from the shadows of a cheapie that was never really played to become one of the biggest dancefloor fillers in the land. Store mint copy. B DOUBLE O’S DEMINGO’S COLOR ONE TEAR BLACK SPLIT 305222 VG 200 This strangely-named Ohio combo have at least four very rare records on this label of which this might be the rarest. Parts 1+2 are very different and it’s Part 2 that does it for the dancers. Tremendous funky modern soul. Please note – Part 1, the sweet-soul side doesn’t play through. At 26 seconds it sticks due to a scratch. C FREEMAN BROTHERS YOU GOT ME ON A STRING INT. ALLIED 501 M- 150 Once described as the ‘Frank Wilson’ of Deep Soul! And whilst it isn’t that rare... or indeed, that kind of money, it certainly is a classic of that particular genre, having all the right ingredients to put you on your knees. D THE STEVE KARMEN BREAKAWAY UNITED M- 200 BIG BAND ft. JIMMY ARTISTS 50451 RADCLIFFE Folks go on about rare issues – black RCAs, red Columbias and the like but this one on an ISSUE is up there with the rarest of them – only the second copy we’ve ever had. E SWISS MOVEMENT I WISH OUR LOVE WOULD GOLD 02 M- 150 LAST FOREVER Great modern soul dancer familiar to many.... HOWEVER, this is the very first release (on gold vinyl) that doesn’t actually have a label name on it. It’s either a weird promo or a withdrawn mistake, certainly much rarer than the release with label logo etc... F SPOT AND THE CIRCULATING EQUAL 459601 M- 200 BLOTTERS From Grand Rapids, Michigan – a fair drive from Detroit but with Palmer James on production duties there is certainly a Motor City feel about this one which can’t have got very far due to unusual name of the group. Hardly sound like soulmen do they? But they are! G THE EMBERS WISH YOU DIDN’T HAVE TO EEE 0069 M- 150 GO Now here’s a mystery, and a rarity too. EEE 0069 is listed everywhere as ‘Just Crazy ‘Bout You Baby’ c/w ‘We’ve Come A Long Way Together’. This copy has only the second of those titles coupled with a great version of the Spooner and the Spoons record (which is on their rare album and was thought to be album-only). H LARRY WILLIAMS & TOO LATE OKEH 7281 WD M- 150 JOHNNY WATSON A recent book about soul had the author claiming that the ‘Northern’ sound was so diverse these days that it was difficult to identify. Between ’70 and ’74 there was no such dilemma with storming 60s being the order of the day. Here is a classic example. Has a pic sleeve too. I THE FASCINATIONS LUCKY MAYFIELD 7711 WD M- 500 A real rarity – a fluke misspress of ‘I’m So Lucky He Loves Me’ presents the INSTRUMENTAL (not the vocal) with ‘Say It Isn’t So’ on the reverse. The mistake was quickly realised leaving a one-off fluke as a VERY rare record indeed. J CODY BLACK STRANGER THAN A PAMELA 7454 M- 200 FAIRY TALE Cody Black’s first, and very obscure, record saw him released on the Pamela label in his native Cincinnati but this one sounds like a Detroit recording to us even if the label reputedly is not from the Motor City. A very rare and solid early soul dancer whatever the scenario. K DENISE LA SALLE LOVE REPUTATION TARPON 6603 D M- 200 Totally wonderful item that is certainly Northern and certainly soul. Demand on Chess is high but this is the original label and a promo as well. Beautiful condition, our recording might be its first spin! L CECIL WASHINGTON I DON’T LIKE TO LOSE PROPHONICS 2029 M- 1500 Same perfect condition as (K). Met this guy once, around 10 years ago. He is/was a pastor in Topeka, Kansas of all places and, needless to say, he didn’t have a copy of his 1967 release! SECOND PAGE FOCUS 1 FRED HUGHES YOU CAN’T TAKE IT AWAY VEE-JAY 703 M- 15 Same song as Azie Mortimer on Okeh. The first version actually. 2 BOBBY HEBB LOVE ME PHILIPS 40421 M- 10 Bobby, revisits ‘Sunny’ with more of a dance beat. 3 THE KELLY HAVEN’T I BEEN GOOD TO EXCELLO 2295 M- 15 BROTHERS YOU The Kellys always deliver, as is the case with this groover with southern overtones – but still Northern! 4 ODDS AND ENDS APPLES, PEACHES, PUMPKIN TODAY 1513 M- 10 PIE Far superior 1972 version produced by Patrick Adams. Quite soulful actually. 5 FOUR TOPS SOMETHING ABOUT YOU MOTOWN 1084 M- 10 What price this one if it was a Detroit obscurity? The absolute business – get yourself a minter. 6 THE VONTASTICS LET ME DOWN EASY TODDLIN TOWN 115 M- 20 Ooh – nice, nice, nice Chicago Northern. 7 MARY WELLS USE YOUR HEAD 20TH CENTURY M- 15 FOX 555 For the Northern crowd Mary’s 20th Century and Atco records beat her Motown stuff to the punch! 8 ARETHA FRANKLIN INTEGRITY ARISTA 9528 M- 15 Not too many eighties records are rare over – but here’s one BUT BUT BUT, in a lovely ‘clear’ vinyl press. 9 BILLY STEWART OL’ MAN RIVER CHESS 1991 M- 15 Yes, the old Paul Robeson song translates into a great Northern treatment. 10 REGGIE SOUL I FEEL SO BAD RED BALLOON 03 M- 25 Chicago obscurity that got a few Stafford spins. Superb funky Northern ‘I Got Jody’ on the reverse. NORTHERN RARITIES 11 THE MALIBUS GEE BABY (I LOVE YOU) SURE-SHOT 5028 D M- 200 12 BARBARA McNAIR YOU’RE GONNA’ LOVE MY MOTOWN 1087 WD M- 200 BABY Rare promo. 13 EDDIE HOLMAN I SURRENDER ABC 11149 M - 125 14 BOBBY GARRETT I CAN’T GET AWAY MIRWOOD 5508 M- 100 Rare purple label copy. 15 THE CHI-LITES SHE’S MINE BLUE ROCK 4037 WD M- 350 16 JIMMY HOLLAND BABY DON’T LEAVE ME BLUE ROCK 4036 WD M- 100 17 THE ARABIANS (PLEASE) TAKE A CHANCE LE-MANS 002 WD M- 300 ON ME 18 JIMMY HOLIDAY & READY, WILLING AND MINIT 32021 M- 25 CLYDIE KING ABLE 19 TONY DIAMOND DON’T TURN AWAY BLUE ROCK 4019 WD M- 200 20 THE VOLCANOS YOUR NUMBER 1 ARCTIC 128 WD M- 200 Rare original, rarer promo – not even listed in a certain very expensive price guide! 21 THE BEAS WHERE DO I GO FROM DEE GEE 3010 WD M- 30 YOU 22 TAMBI GARRET A LITTLE LOVE ASCOT 2208 WD M- 50 23 THE VALONS YOU’RE SOMETHING MARK III 450 M- 60 SPECIAL 24 SANDY WADDY EVERYTHING IS EVERYTHING SOS 1003 M- 30 25 WILLIE DIGGS GOOD NEWS MONCA 1778 M- 40 Totally under the radar – very soulful and pretty scarce Northern pounder out of Washington. 26 THE FIVE DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME WINDY C 601 M- 25 STAIRSTEPS Original version as per the Shamettes. 27 THE BROWNETTES BABY, DON’T YOU KNOW KING 6153 M- 50 28 DEE DEE SHARP IT’S A FUNNY SITUATION CAMEO 382 D M- 40 29 JACKIE BURNS AND I DO THE BEST I CAN MGM 13182 D M- 75 THE BO-BELLS 30 ETTA JAMES & SUGAR DO I MAKE MYSELF CADET 5519 VG++ 20 PIE DeSANTO CLEAR 31 THE MONZAS IN MY LONELY ROOM PACIFIC 46745 VG++ 100 32 DEBBIE ROLLINS HE REALLY LOVES ME ASCOT 2148 WD M- 30 33 THE POODLES STEP BY STEP SOUTHERN CITY 1111 M- 75 34 EDIE WALKER YOUR UNUSUAL LOVE MEW 103 M- 250 35 RUBY LEE I BELIEVE YOU POPTONE 1901 M- 40 36 TONY CLARKE THE FUGITIVE KIND CHESS 13948 M- 25 37 WILLIE HATCHER HEAD OVER HEELS KING 6360 WD M- 50 38 JIMMIE RAYE YOU MUST BE LOSING JRE 4220 M- 250 YOUR MIND Fabulous beat ballad, first label before Garrison – rare. 39 CATHY SAINT BIG BAD WORLD DAISY 501 M- 35 40 LEE MARTELL A HOUSE BY THE SIDE OF RENEGRADE 1202 M- 30 THE ROAD 41 ANNA KING MAMA’S GOT A BAG OF END 1126 VG++ 25 HER OWN 42 DON GARDNER MY BABY LIKES TO TRU-GLO-TOWN 501 M- 125 BOOGALOO Multi coloured label design. 43 BARBARA MILLS QUEEN OF FOOLS HICKORY 1323 M- 85 Original, first issue. 44 LITTLE JOHNNY MOMMA’S GONE HOUSE OF THE FOX M- 20 BLAIR 5 45 BEN AIKEN YOU WERE MEANT TO BE LOMA 2069 M- 25 MY BABY 46 BARBARA ENGLISH ALL THE GOOD TIMES ARE WARNER BROS 5685 M- 40 GONE Rarer orange stock copy. 47 CHUCK BERNARD EVERY HURT MAKES YOU SATELLITE 2008 WD M- 40 STRONGER 48 THE SHEPARDS LITTLE GIRL LOST ABC PARAMOUNT M- 150 10758 WD 49 THE FLIRTATIONS NOTHING BUT A DERAM 85038 M- 35 HEARTACHE 50 DOC & THE INTERNS BABY I KNOW NOW 1 M- 40 51 THE SONS OF WHEN YOU LOVE, YOU’RE BLUE ROCK 4086 WD M- 40 WATTS LOVED TOO 52 THE VOLUMES GOTTA GIVE HER LOVE AMERICAN ARTS 6 M- 60 WD 53 THE O’JAYS IT WON’T HURT IR IMPERIAL 66145 M- 35 WD 54 JEANETTE WILLIAMS YOU DIDN’T KNOW THEN BACK BEAT 5113 D M- 25 55 JAMES CARR A LOSING GAME GOLDWAX 323 M- 30 56 BETH BYNUM I’LL SET YOU FREE STAR-MAKER 1927 M- 30 57 JACKIE SHANE STAND UP STRAIGHT AND MODERN 1031 M- 100 TALL 58 Z.
