CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION This chapter explains about introduction which consists of background of the study, research question, definition of the key terms, objective of the study, significances of this study, and organization of the thesis. A. Background of the Study Grensler (2010: 351) states that Logic was born in ancient Greece then reborn a hundred ago. Since then, Logic has grown and expanded even more, and has contributed to the emergence of the computer age. We can better understand and appreciate Logic by studying its history. This study was begun by Aristotle 384-322 in ancient Greece. He is the first person who studies about Logic and makes other experts to study about it. One of them is Montague. Logic is important in the development of computers. The basic insight behind computers is that logical functions like “and” and “or” can be simulated electrically by Logic gates; this idea goes back to the American logician Charles Sanders Peirce in the 1880s and Claude Shannon who rediscovered in 1938. If we apply standard Logic in natural language Semantics, we inherit this basic trait, and can only expect our logical Semantics to have descriptive and explanatory value for the kind of linguistic phenomena that are related closely enough to what the Logic is about. Logic today is also an important part of cognitive science. Logic is an interdisciplinary approarch to thought that includes areas like Linguistics, Psy 1 2 chology, Biology (especially areas dealing with brain and sensory systems), Computers (especially artificial intelligence), and other branches of Philosophy (especially Epistemology and Philosophy of mind). In Lenci and Sandu ( 2004: 2), they state in Linguistics, Logic can be defined as natural language like which Chomskian revolution has therefore deeply affected the relationship between Logic and Linguistics, the latter being intended as a naturalistic scientific enterprise subject to the same methodological requirements of other Naturwissenschaften (natural sciences) like Physics or Chemistry. Therefore, the phenomena of Logic can also be found in movie. Walt Disney Animation Studios directed many cartoon, one of which is Moana in 2016. It is the 56th Disney animated feature film. Directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, co-directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams. In 2016, this film had awards in category Best Animated Feature in Nevada Film Critics Society and Best Original Song ("How Far I'll Go"). Thus, the writer is interested in studying about Logic in Moana Movie Script. The reason the writer chooses Moana movie as the data because this movie different with other Disney Movie. Moana is a little modern than other Disney Movie which tells about love, prince charming, royal life and others, while Moana tells about struggle, responsibility, adventure, more inspiring and has many moral values. 3 This movie tells starting from the story of her grandmother, Gramma Tala, little Moana was very enthusiastic about the legends and myths that spread across the South Pacific island of Oceania a long time ago. Gramma Tala has a strong instinct that Moana is destined to sail the ocean and explore from island to island like her ancestors. When approaching adulthood, Moana’s strong desire had to explore was increasingly high to leave her tribe and village and find out who she really was. Although, it was hindered by her father, Tui and also as the chief of the village where she lives. But that does not decrease her determination to explore the ocean and the mission that Moana carried out, saving his village from a curse, to take on this mission, Moana had to meet with the legend from the South Pacific islands who called himself a demigod, Maui. If this works, Moana and Maui can save their village from a terrible curse. This movie has many moral values namely need effort to achieve desire and never give up to get what we want like Moana’s struggle during adventure to search Maui and return the heart, always follow your heart, then remember good attitude will defeat bad attitude, dare to admit mistakes and apologize and give your forgiveness to those who hurt you. There are still many moral value from this movie. Basically, this study is conducted for several reasons. The most crucial one is that because the phenomena of Logic can be found in 4 daily conversations. Then, this study is about the analysis on Logic, as this movie has not yet been analysed before. B. Research Question This study has one research question which is: What kinds of Logic are realized in Disney Moana Movie Script? C. Definition of the Key Terms The writer gives the definition and explanation of the key terms to make the the readers easily understand as follows: 1. Logic According to Hintikka (2017: 1), “Logic is the study of correct reasoning, especially as it involves the drawing of inferences.” ( https://www.britannica.com/topic/logic (Accessed on 15 December 2017 at 2 a.m)). 2. Movie Script Based on Screenwriting (2018: 1), “A script is a document that outlines every aural, visual, behavioral, and lingual element required to tell a story.” (http://www.screenwriting.info/01.php (Accessed on 12 April 2018 at 2 pm)). 3. Moana Moana is a 2016 American 3D computer-animated musical fantasy-adventure film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is the 56th Disney animated feature film. Directed by Ron Clements and John 5 Musker, co-directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams, the film introduces Auli'i Cravalho as Moana and features the voices of Dwayne Johnson, Rachel House, Temuera Morrison, Jemaine Clement, Nicole Scherzinger, and Alan Tudyk. The film features music were written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa'i, and Mark Mancina. This movie tells about the strong willed daughter of chief of Polinesian village, who is chosen by the ocean itself to reunite a mystical relic with a goodess. When a blight strikes her island, Moana sets sail in search of Maui, a legendary demigod, in the hope of returning the heart of Te Fiti and saving her people. Objective of the Study Based on the research question, the objective of the study is to analyse the kinds of Logic in Disney Moana Movie Script. E. Significances of the Study The writer expects that the result of the study will provide some benefits, as follows : 1. Theoretically This study can be used as reference for the next researchers who conduct this kind of research. 6 2. Practically This study is expected to improve the writer’s academic writing skill. 3. Pedagogically The result of this research is expected to invite the students of English Education Study Program as the candidate of English teachers to analyse any kind of text. F. Organization of the Thesis The thesis entitled “Logic Analysis on Main Character of Disney Moana Movie Script” is organized into five chapters. Chapter I is introduction, which consists of background of the study, research question, definition of the key terms, objective of the study, significances of the study, and organization of the thesis. Chapter II is review of related literature, which consists of theoretical study, previous studies, and theoretical framework. Chapter III is method of investigation, which consists of research design, the source of data, technique of data collection, and technique of data analysis. Chapter IV is findings and interpretation, which presents and discusses the analysis of the data. Chapter V consists of conclusion and suggestions. 7.
