Modules available include: Introduction to local government in the NT Roles of elected and local authority members Responsibilities of elected and local authority members Communication skills Community engagement Code of Conduct How to chair a meeting Meeting procedures How to read a financial report (Local Authorities) How to read council budgets ( Elected Members) Leadership and Teamwork skills LGANT’s role and services External training providers, Department of Housing and Community Development staff and consultants are also available to deliver training. Expressions of Interest sought: 2018 Governance Essentials for Local Government LGANT is seeking expressions of interest from councils for the Governance Essentials for Local Government (non-accredited) program delivered by the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Designed to provide Councillors, Mayors and Executive Management a basic overview of their duties and responsibilities through interactive working sessions and relevant case studies, the two-day program covers four modules: 1. The role of the Council and Councillor, 2. Leadership: the Councillor's role, 3. Risk: issues for Councillors, and 4. Introduction for financial information for Councillors. The training is suitable for new councillors and staff, as well as those more experienced members who could benefit from refresher training. LGANT has received a number of requests about this course and if there is sufficient interest, LGANT will endeavour to deliver the course in Darwin, Alice Springs and Katherine during February/March 2018. Each course will cater for up to 25 participants. LGANT is attempting to secure funding for these courses. If funding is not secured, councils will need to be prepared to meet the costs (approximately $30,000 per course regardless of participant numbers). Ideally each course would have the full 25 participants from multiple councils per region. LGANT requires commitment from councils by the end of October 2017. Dates and venues will be based on commitments from councils. For more information, email [email protected] or phone 89 44 9674. Parap Pool and Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility Tour LGANT management, staff and friends recently toured the Parap Pool and Shoal Bay Waste Management facilities development. Luccio Cercarelli, General Manager Infrastructure at City of Darwin, guided the group around the Parap Pool construction site and explained the long term planning that took place for the international standard Olympic sized facility. It is due to be opened in early 2018, and is jointly funded by the Commonwealth and NT Governments with the City of Darwin. The City of Darwin is undertaking modern treatment of its leachates at the Shoal Bay Waste Management facility. This treatment will improve water quality to a level where it can be used to irrigate open space at the site and encourage native vegetation. It is not unlike those used on mines sites.
