We are so grateful to all of you! UC Santa Barbara raised $180 million in gifts and pledges in fiscal year 2019 — an achievement for which we have you, our donors, to thank. Our five-year annual fundraising totals now average $125 million, a 25% increase over prior years. This trend of continuous growth in our donors’ investment in education reaffirms and bolsters the continuous rise in stature of our institution. More than ever UC Santa Barbara is receiving leadership gifts that are establishing new programs and transforming existing initiatives. Indeed, gifts of $1 million or more comprised $130 million of total dollars raised this past year. That includes a visionary and inspiring donation of land, the 1,800-acre coastal jewel known as Las Varas Ranch. Your philanthropy enhances areas across our campus, from providing financial support to students to investing in research and discovery. This past year, individual donors gave the largest amounts. We saw a huge increase in legacy commitments, and a significant number of gifts from alumni. Research and programs were the greatest focus of support. Our endowment has grown again by over 14%. The engagement and advocacy that your philanthropy represents are crucial as UC Santa Barbara continually strives to sustain and enhance our world-class stature and reputation for pioneering research, outstanding teaching and devoted public service. None of this would be possible without you — our trustees, alumni, faculty, staff, volunteers and friends. For your visionary investments in UC Santa Barbara, we are forever grateful. Sincerely, Henry T. Yang Richard Breaux ‘67 Chancellor, UC Santa Barbara Chair, UC Santa Barbara Foundation A Living Legacy Charles T. Munger and his generous support transforming UC Santa Barbara Las Varas Ranch, pictured here, is a 1,800-acre agricultural property located six miles west of our campus. The ranch stretches between the Pacific Ocean and Los Padres National Forest. This land has been gifted to our campus through the tremendous generosity and unique vision of philanthropist Charles T. Munger, who is interested in the long-term benefit of our campus. We are immensely fortunate to have been entrusted with this “coastal jewel,” which includes two miles of coastline. With more than 500 acres of pastureland, an 18-acre lake, and fruit orchards, the land offers rich agricultural resources and exceptional educational opportunities. For a long time, UC Santa Barbara will maintain the property in its current state as a working ranch. Societies & Supporters 3 Previously, in 2014, Mr. Munger designed and funded the Charles T. Munger Physics Residence, a premier living and collaborative environment for our Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics. We are most grateful to Charlie Munger for blessing our campus with a gift that will benefit our university for generations to come. In the years ahead, we will consult with our campus community and local community on the future vision of this working ranch. This is much more than just a gift of land, but rather a living legacy, a vision for the long-range future of our campus. Boundless Philanthropy Societies & Supporters Boundless Philanthropy 5 “Thank you for helping us discover campus! UC Santa Barbara will always be our home.” Cole Mesa ‘20 We know the paths we walk and the colleagues we work alongside, but none of us alone can see all of UC Santa Barbara at once. It takes a community of forward-thinking scholars and philanthropists to imagine the long view. What do we see? Boundless Philanthropy A university growing quickly, expanding past preconceived borders. A communal and comprehensive education. Limitless academic excellence and creative expression. We envision a future of endless possibilities 7 and it begins with your generosity. Together, we are infinitely connected to UC Santa Barbara. Unending Gratitude Your generosity extends through generations Dear UC Santa Barbara Supporters, You continually show us what endless generosity can accomplish. I’m happy to share that with the help of our alumni and friends, UC Santa Barbara has raised $180 million in private funding over the 2019 fiscal year — reaching a milestone in fundraising for our campus. The stories within illustrate the breadth and depth of your generosity. Together, we helped students, faculty and researchers push the limits of knowledge. So many of you support interdisciplinary programs that transcend traditional boundaries, and it’s with your help that UC Santa Barbara continues to earn its ranking as a top public university. UC Santa Barbara’s community expands far beyond our campus borders. We are proud to share that our alumni support surpassed $20 million, comprising 50% of our gifts last year. Throughout this report, you’ll hear from students empowered by your generosity to foster the very best versions of themselves. When these Gauchos graduate, they will pursue their dreams in California and beyond. They will join you in inspiring current students and supporting the next generation of scholars. We are so encouraged by your participation of both time and treasure in our campus. Thanks to you, the future of UC Santa Barbara is limitless. With gratitude, Beverly J.
