Parsuraman Director Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai 4 SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK, TATA INSTITUTE OF SOCIAL SCIENCES DEAN’S MESSAGE It gives me immense pleasure to draw your attention to this brochure and the details about our graduating students. Tata Institute of Social Sciences, established in the year 1936, is the first Social Work institute in South Asia. Consolidating 79 years of experience, the School of Social Work has given shape to nine thematic programmes across eight centres of the School. Through its vibrant and dynamic curriculum, knowledge and praxis through teaching, research, and the School is engaged in building social work field action and engagements in complex and challenging domains. It produces professionals who possess innovative ideas, competence and skill sets to work in fields which are diverse and span varied areas of social work practice. The curriculum of the M.A. Social Work programmes, in the first year, provides a theoretical and conceptual grounding in social work. In the second year the students deepen their knowledge and understanding around the thematic thrust of their programmes: Community Organisation and Development Practice, Criminology and Justice, Dalit and Tribal Studies and Action, Disability Studies and Action, Social Work with Children and Families, Livelihood and Social Entrepreneurship, Mental Health, Public Health, and Women Centred Practice. The students of School of Social work come from different disciplines of social sciences, humanities, technology and natural sciences. Many of the students join the programmes with varied work experiences. Diversity of their socio - economic and regional background positively influences the students learning and growth in the campus. The programme equips students with the skills and ability to work directly with people, to relate public policies with planning processes and development programmes and come up with innovative solutions to critical real world social problems. Other than classroom teaching, students are provide the opportunity for practical application through the compulsory components of fieldwork, internship, rural practicum, field-based research and other field engagements. From this students develop a comprehensive understanding of socio-economic realities and are able to engage in social and development work. The School prepares students as professionals who are able to blend the discursive and practical aspects of interventions. The discursive aspects get seen through the divergent stances of welfare, development, rights and entitlements, and are meaningfully integrated to translate into informed practice. Through their knowledge and skill sets, the students are competent to serve in various capacities in development organizations with government agencies, non-governmental organizations, policy think-tanks, advocacy groups and corporate. I am sure through your interaction with this socially sensitive and competent cadre of Social Work professionals, you would be happy to select them to take forward the work of your esteemed organisation. Prof. Manish Jha Dean, School of Social Work SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK, TATA INSTITUTE OF SOCIAL SCIENCES 5 FACULTY CONVENOR’S MESSAGE The Career Guidance and Placement Cell (CGPC) at the School of social work, is an initiative for catering asustained guidance and facilitation to students seeking an enriching career in the social development sector. CGPC extends several orientation opportunities to the students, such as a dialogue with practitioners through capacity development programs, interaction with alumni, exploration of sectoral as well as emerging areas of career opportunities, workshops on personality development, career guidance, summer placement, internship during the winter vacation, culminating into final job placement. CGPC being the students’ driven unit, primarily functions with its Executive Body with the support of the Faculty Convener. It strives to bring together the prospective recruiting organisations and the students with a motive of exploring mutuality for a continued relationship where the recruiter finds a suitable employee and the student too explores an organisation to work and contribute to its growth. Nevertheless, securing employment by the students is not the ultimate goal of CGPC, as it advocates the students to remain in contact with, even after their graduation and career movements. It also envisages receiving feedbacks from the recruiting organisations on our students working with and for their organisations. We look forward to a sustained partnership with the organisations coming here for recruitments as well as the graduating students from this Institute. Prof. H.
