Situated in the Barak Valley of southern Assam, the University is nestled in a sprawling 600-acre campus at Dargakona, about 23 km from Silchar town. In 2007, Assam University opened a 90-acre satellite campus at Diphu in the Karbi Anglong Hills District of Assam, thereby making quality higher education accessible to a wider section of society. With students’ strength about 3246 in the Silchar campus and 705 in Diphu campus, the University is a veritable melting pot of diverse communities, ideas and creativity. Apart from the two campuses of the University, there are 73 affiliated and permitted colleges in the five districts of south Assam, which together constitute the jurisdiction of Assam University and there are more than 37,367 students enrolled in the affiliated colleges. Since 1994, Assam University has expanded both in size and reputation. Today, there are 39 postgraduate departments under 16 schools of studies in the Silchar campus and 10 departments in Diphu campus, offering a wide range of programmes geared towards equipping students and research scholars with knowledge, skills, experience and confidence, the benefits of which they can reap well into the future. Besides, there are several Centres of Study in the University dedicated to research of high quality. Recently, the University has developed a strategy for enhancing the range of pedagogic uses of technology. As part of this strategy, the University is in the process of gradually turning all its classrooms into state-of-the-art ones enabling teachers to teach using a wide variety of media. There's no gainsaying that in the last twenty two years of its relentless pursuit of academic excellence, Assam University has made giant strides in providing better academic atmosphere and improved infrastructural facilities. Assam University, Silchar | iii Annual Report 2017-18 THE LOGO The Logo has a book at the base. Knowledge in the form of flame of light is emerging from the book to lead to modern technology to ensure human development. In the background, there are hills and plains representing the Barak Valley and the hills districts. All the elements are ultimately put in a wheel of progress, so that the University acts as an instrument of change and development for the area within its jurisdiction. The promise of progress is represented by the Rising Sun which is shown as emerging across the symbol of technological growth. 'Assam University, Silchar' and 'Pratyayabodhakritirupapattaye' (in Devanagri) are inscribed in the Logo. OUR MOTTO The Motto of the university is " Pratyayabodhakritirupapattaye " meaning 'Conviction, Confidence and Creativity'. OBJECTIVES OF THE UNIVERSITY The objectives of the university have been laid down in the Act as follows: To disseminate and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities in such branches of learning as it may deem fit and by the example of its corporate life to make provisions for integrated courses in Humanities, Natural and Physical Sciences and Social Sciences in the educational programmes of the University; To take appropriate measures for promoting inter-disciplinary studies and research in the University; To educate and train manpower for development of the State of Assam; and To pay special attention to the improvement of the social and economic conditions and welfare of the people of that state, their intellectual, academic and cultural development. Mission To fulfill the long-cherished aspirations of the people of Assam especially to the Barak Valley to have a national level higher education institution par excellence and contribute substantially in the nation building exercise. Will devote to teaching, learning and multi-disciplinary research upholding simultaneously equity, access and excellence so as to be part of the globally acceptable higher education standards. Contribute to enhance Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) and hence to national welfare sans prejudice, discrimination and bias based on gender, caste, community, regional and linguistic barrier. Develop the regional cultural richness and take it forward to interact with national cultural mosaic. Help to create an egalitarian society by developing thought leaders with a difference in all fields of educational and research activities. Encourage students to respect all ideas, think and discuss with freedom of expression as a major vehicle of transformation leading to creativity with self-reliance. Connect with the local population and contribute to its development through outreach programmes and other initiatives. We have identified the gray areas in which the University need improvement and the entire machinery is working tirelessly to overcome the shortcomings and place the University in the path of excellence. The University celebrated its 25th Foundation Day on 21st January, 2018 with lot of enthusiasm Prof Dilip Chandra Nath and commitments in presence of all the former Vice- Vice-Chancellor Chancellors of Assam University. The XVIth Convocation of Assam University, Silchar Assam University was organized on 16th March, 2018. Other important events of national importance were also celebrated in the University.
