GHS & LHMC and Associated Hospitals iv Lady Hardinge Medical College & Associated Hospitals | Annual Report-2019 Director’s SPEECH FOR THE ANNUAL DAY Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC) had the fortune of having Mahatma Gandhi himself coming and addressing College students with the students at the same time also spinning Khadi in the Convocation Hall during Satyagraha movement. ‘Satyagraha’ - that is holding on to the ‘Truth’, is thus ingrained in this College ethos. LHMC has made a name for itself in delivering quality education, providing opportunities for clinical and basic research and maintaining good standards of patient care. This achievement has been brought about by the joint efforts of the dedicated students, efficient faculty and ramping up of support infrastructure and facilities. LHMC uptil 2020 has produced 8255 MBBS, 495 Diploma, 2475 MS/MD and 40MCh/DM graduates. Also 335 BSc Nursing and 1778 Diploma General Nursing students have graduated from here till date. This is a significant contribution to health services and nation building. Our college remained a preferred destination in the country for admission through NEET UG into MBBS course and through NEET PG into many postgraduate courses. This institution continued to march ahead in 2019 calendar year and beyond in its quest to remain as an institution of repute in the field of medicine. I was posted to this institute for the second time - this time as the Director on 9th January 2020. The highest priority was accorded to speed up the work on Comprehensive Redevelopment Dr. N N MATHUR Project Phase I through regular meetings and MS DNB FAMS rounds, thereby solving issues pertaining to Director (w.e.f. 9-1-2020) & Additional DGHS & HEFA loan and construction activity. The leftover Director Professor (ENT) part of Comprehensive Redevelopment Project Lady Hardinge Medical College & Smt Sucheta Kriplani and Phase I – comprising of construction of Oncology Kalawati Saran Children’s Hospital Director’s Speech for the Annual Day v block, Academic block, Accident and Emergency (Surgical wing), IPD (Medical wing) & OPD block, STP and ETPs and Electric substation was fast tracked except in the period of lockdown due to COVID when the construction work got halted. It was yet another year in which our students excelled in academics and extracurricular activities. Kavyanjali stood First in 1st, 2nd & 3rd MBBS Part-I & II combined and also in 3rd MBBS Part-II. Shruti Agarwal a stood first in 3rd MBBS Part-I. Shruti Garg stood first 1st in 2nd MBBS, andD hanshree Bakhru stood first 1st in 1st MBBS. The MBBS students performed well in the university examinations with a pass percentage of 96 percent in 1st Professional, 96.6% in 2nd, 99.5% in 3rd (Part-I) and 98.5% in the 3rd Professional (Part-II), while the pass percentage of the Postgraduate (MD/MS) and Postdoctoral students (DM/MCh) in the university examination was 100%. This is commendable. Subsequently many of our postgraduates went on to complete senior residency either in LHMC Hospitals or other reputed institutes like AIIMS, MAMC, and Safdarjung Hospital. Last part of the academic year (March 2020) and beyond, got primarily devoted to erecting an infrastructure to fight COVID 19 – be it establishment of Virology lab for Coronavirus, sampling booths, flu clinics, Red zone in SSKH and KSCH for critically ill COVID cases, overnight converting upcoming yet incomplete Oncology block into COVID block, producing orange zones for suspect cases in the hospital and making suitable facilities for their surgeries, separating out green zones and not discontinuing those Non Covid services at any time, establishing Covid Care Centre services at YMCA for 100 patients, renting hotel rooms around for doctors, nurses, and other Health care workers on COVID duties, engaging DTC buses for staff to commute especially during lock down period, providing appropriate PPEs to all in COVID and hospital duties, and increasing oxygen beds and ventilatory beds in hospital. Accident and Emergency department was revamped with faculty and resident doctors drawn on rotation from General Medicine, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Pulmonary medicine, Paediatrics (at KSCH), and Anaesthesia departments as permitted under MCI rules till such time that an exclusive A&E qualified and trained faculty is available to be recruited. Our institute is enriched with the presence of highly motivated and professional faculty who are the flag bearers of the institute’s reputation. With the improved infrastructure, this institute will now be the preferred choice for them to seek placement and posting. In addition to the regular intensive teaching program to which we give utmost importance, the faculty took lead in organizing several important academic events at international, national and state levels. In addition, the role of both Resident Doctors Association and Students Association was very constructive and highly commendable during the period. Many faculty members were appointed as experts in the interviews of faculty posts by organisations including AIIMS, UPSC, CSIR, AFMC, ACMS, JIPMER, Govt of NCT and other Public Service Commissions. Most of the faculty was appointed as examiner for UG, PG, Post-doctoral (DM, MCh, MD, MS, DNB, FNB, PhD, MBBS,) and fellowship examinations across the nation by various institutions including AIIMS. Several faculty members were appointed as Assessors by MCI, NBE and NABL. Some faculty members were on Board of research studies of different institutions in the country. Number of research articles were published in various journals and chapters contributed in several books. Rigorous research was carried out in the form of post graduate thesis and various extramural projects funded by agencies like WHO, DBT, ICMR etc. Individual achievements of the faculty and milestones achieved by departments were commendable and have been included in the detailed report. In addition, our faculty was very active in healthcare promotion, especially during COVID period, by participating in TV shows like Total Health, Swastha Kisan, Doctors speak and Aaj Savere on Doordarshan and also on several Phone-In Radio programs.
