Commissioned on June 25, 1943, she was 251.9 feet long, 22. 5 feet wide and di placed 740 tons. On May 1, 1945, Hamburg radio an­ nounced that Adolf Hitl er was dead. Grand Admiral Karl D6nitz took over as Der Fuhrer and immediat ely began to arra nge a surr ender.
