Consequently the tables in this volume cover less than half the contemplated range and offer in effect only the distribution of the popula­ tion by commUnity and by province or state, district, tehsil and town. 2. The slips in which the remaining unsorted information is to be found are stored in each province against a possible reopening of tabulation in happier circumstances. PROVINCIAL TABLES I.-Area and population of tehsils 79 JI.--;-Population of districts... and tehsiLs by commullltlt'~ 87 I-AREA, HOUSES AND POPULATION This table gives for each district of the province, and for the States of Rampur, Tehri-Garhwa.l and Benares the area in sq miles, the total number of towns and villages, the number of occupied houses .and the population on March 1, 1941, in urban and rural areas. These details for the tehsils, together with the percentage of variation in the population since the last census, will be found in Provincial Table I, and the population of districts and tehsils by community and literacy in Provincial Table II. The number of occupied houses in towns and villages of each district, and their population by community will be found in the district census statistics. 2. The areas are those supplied by the Survey Department of the Government of India. The figures given here differ to some extent from those given in the corresponding column of Provincial Table I, which are based on the district records of tehsil areas. The areas given at the last census in Imperial Table I were based on the district records of tehsil areas, and the difference between the provincial areas as now given by the Survey Department and the Provincial area at the last census as based on the district records is-332 square miles. Out of this the real reduction in area is of 71 miles only which is due to the following extra and intra-provincial transfers :- Extra Provincial Transfers' (a) 2 sq miles of district Bulandshahr was transferred to district Gurgaon in Punjab. (b) (i) 3 sq miles of district Kamal, Punjab, added to Muzaffarnagar district.
