Marko Komac, EFG President European Federation of Geologists C/O Service Géologique de Belgique Rue Jenner 13 B-1000 Bruxelles, Belgium Dear Reader, Tel: +32 2 7887636 [email protected] It is my great pleasure that I can for the first time write the www.eurogeologists.eu foreword for the European Geologist in which we address the topic of the geological heritage of Europe. The issue of geological heritage, “geoheritage” for short, is EFG BOARD probably the most recently addressed domain in geological sciences and has been recognised as one of the best opportu- PRESIDENT nities to promote geology to a wider public. And although the EurGeol. Marko Komac term “geoheritage” seems obvious, it often represents different [email protected] concepts to different people. Logically, a question arises: what does geological heritage mean? It could mean using the same building material (stones) in restorative architecture as that from which the buildings were VICE-PRESIDENT originally constructed. It could mean passing geological knowledge to experts through EurGeol. Michael Neumann training, students through higher-level teaching or the general public through education, [email protected] raising interest in geological topics (rocks, fossils, processes). It could mean preserving either geo-sites and materials or the technological heritage related to geology and mining, SECRETARY-GENERAL at a local level or at an internationally recognised level through the UNESCO Global EurGeol. Gabriele Ponzoni Geopark Network. [email protected] To recapitulate all of the above-mentioned areas, geoheritage addresses the conservation of the Earth’s related relics and contemporary processes, either by physical protection or TREASURER by descriptive means, with the aim of their preservation, management and understandable EurGeol. Ruth Allington interpretation to both experts and the wider public. [email protected] Putting it in simple words, geoheritage is about preserving Earth’s treasures for the future. Trying to put it into the frame of trending topics, it also involves tackling the present chal- lenges society is facing, including the climate crisis – all this is a part of our geoheritage. EXTERNAL RELATIONS OFFICER Despite the possibility that I may be understood as being controversial, it is my opinion that EurGeol. Pavlos Tyrologou not addressing the climate crisis could lead to the disappearance of numerous treasures of [email protected] the Earth belonging to the geoheritage and as such often even legally protected. The current issue of the European Geologist tries to address various aspects of geoheritage, from different thematic and different cultural perspectives, which gives it additional value EDITORIAL BOARD in understanding how to approach geological heritage in specific situations with specific Éva Hartai (Editor in chief) topics and at specific scales. Pierre Christe I sincerely hope you’ll find the issue interesting to read and I firmly believe you’ll also Vitor Correia find the information useful in your daily professional work, free-time activities or merely Isabel Fernández Fuentes as a casual reader. Hans-Jürgen Gursky I wish you many interesting moments in reading the latest issue of the journal.
