New. kh ________________________________________ Supplementary Reports: Canterbury Park Wednesday 19 August 2020 Race 1 – Hyland Race Colours Handicap 1200m: Sacred Captain – Stewards today concluded an inquiry into the death of the gelding. A necropsy report from the University Teaching Hospital Camden found that the gelding suffered exercise-associated sudden death as a result of cardiorespiratory failure. Stewards considered veterinary treatment records provided by trainer Mr J. Sargent. A post-mortem urine sample taken from the gelding returned a negative result to all prohibited substances. Having considered the veterinary evidence from Racing NSW Club's Veterinary Officer, Dr Toby Koenig, along with the necropsy report and the stable's veterinary and treatment records, the Stewards determined that Sacred Captain displayed no identifiable pre-existing condition that may have led to its death. King stated that the filly travelled only fairly through the early and middle stages and did not accelerate as expected when asked for an effort, however, finished off the race fairly in her view. R. King added that in her opinion the filly will benefit from the first-up performance and appreciate being stepped up in distance at its next race start. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. RACE 3: Bowermans Commercial Furniture Handicap 1000m: Akasaki – From a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages. For some distance approaching the 600m raced in restricted room to the inside of Damaged. Biscara – As the start was effected turned its head to the nearside, resulting in the mare beginning awkwardly and losing ground. Damaged – From the outside barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages. Rider G. Boss reported that the colt jumped awkwardly and shifted out shortly after the start, however, was able to secure a trailing position behind Aeecee Vinco a short distance later and travelled well. He added that when placed under pressure rounding the home turn his mount accelerated well, however, commenced to tire sooner than expected and proved disappointing in the run to the finish. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be displaying cardiac arrhythmia. Stable representative Mr D. Beadman was advised that a veterinary clearance, including the results of an ECG will be required before Damaged having to barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to racing again. RACE 4: Sky Racing Active Handicap 2400m: Home Ground – When asked for an explanation regarding the disappointing performance, App. B. Griffiths stated that the gelding travelled well but was under pressure immediately when the tempo increased passing the 600m and proved one-paced in the run to the finish. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Red Hot Chillypins – Began awkwardly. Aperol Sprint – From a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages. Carluca – Held up approaching and rounding the home turn until the 250m. When asked for an explanation regarding the tactics adopted today, which appeared to be in contrast to its most recent start at Warwick Farm on 12 August 2020, J. Collett informed Stewards that he was instructed to ride the gelding with cover and from the wide barrier was obliged to settle towards the rear of the field in order to comply with his instructions. Trainer Mr J. Austin informed Stewards that the gelding did not finish off the race as expected when ridden prominently at its last start and today he instructed J. Collett to ride Carluca with cover in an endeavour to have it close off the race strongly. After considering the explanations provided, Stewards did not take any direct action other than to remind Mr Austin of his obligations to inform Stewards of any change of tactics. Miyake – Began awkwardly. Nothing Too Hard – Slow to begin and from a wide barrier then was shifted behind runners in the early stages. Emanuela – Slow to begin and then bumped with Miyake, which shifted in. Rider B. Avdulla could offer no explanation for the mare's performance today. Silent Agenda – Leaving the 1100m had to be steadied from the heels of Gemmahra (App. L. Day), which shifted in when not quite clear, App. Day was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground. Silent Agenda then overraced and refused to settle despite the efforts of its rider until near the 800m. RACE 6: All Too Hard @ Vinery Handicap 1300m: General Soho – Began awkwardly and was crowded between Military Academy and Herzegovina, which was taken out by Aftermath. Bartley – When asked about the tactics adopted, which resulted in the colt settling towards the rear of the field, which appeared to be in contrast to its normal racing pattern, rider J. McDonald stated that he was instructed to ride the colt prominently, however, from his wide barrier, when it appeared several runners to his inside were pushing forward, he elected to restrain his mount to a position towards the rear of the field. Celer – Slow to begin. Overraced in the middle stages. Held up and unable to improve rounding the home turn. Leaving the 100m had to be steadied from the heels of Aftermath when that runner was taken out by Return With Honour (N. Rawiller), which shifted out under pressure. N. Rawiller was advised to exercise more care and to stop riding and straighten his mounts sooner than he had done on this occasion. Nerone – When asked to explain the disappointing performance, rider J. Collett stated that after taking a trailing position behind the leader, Return With Honour, in the early stages his mount travelled well, however, when asked for an effort rounding the home turn Nerone failed to respond and proved disappointing in the run to the finish. J. Collett added that whilst he could not offer any tangible explanation for the horse's disappointing run, he believed it would take benefit from its first-up performance.
