”DOGME 18” Beskriv her, hvordan tilvalget forventes at leve op til Dogme 18 og de udmeldte kriterier for tilvalg 1) Global challenges will supplement and increase core competences in a variety of BA disciplines because globalization challenges territorial, cultural and disciplinary boundaries. The tilvag in Global Challenges conceived as a necessary add-on to core questions posed within the limits of all disciplinary frameworks at the faculty. Whether dealing with practices within particular socities, regions, cultures, languages, religions, in different fields (for instance media, aesthetics and politics ) or in different periods, the global points to the transgressing and interconnecting elements that helps explain them. In a world influenced by increasing connectivities and transnational factors, it has become nessary to test exisiting boundaries and hegemonies. By extending the perspective and focusing on specific global challenges students will be offered knowledge and skills as well as developing competences that will provide them with new questions to be addressed within their core disciplines. 2) As mentioned above, we think that working with global challenges will be relevant for almost all disciplines within the humanities. It is hard to find subjects that have not been strongly influenced by the increasing globalization. all discplines are exposed to questions that go beyond the national or the regional. Thinking of the global in the form of global challenges is also relevant in a more normative and more applied perspective. 3) In the tilvalg on Global Challenges, the students will be asked to work in disciplinary groups where they take up questions of high relevance within their discipline. Historians will compare global challeges in the past with actual challenges, historians of ideas and philosophers will look at different conceptualizations of the global and the universal, anthropologist will investigate various forms of cultural contacts, students in religious studies will examine the spreading and the transformation of religion, students in area studies will look at the regional varities and the structural asymmetries within globalization, students of media studies will investigate the primary role of media technologies, media framings and media cultures in globalization, students of aesthetics and linguistics will thoroughly examine translation (in a broad sense) as an approach to interconnectedness. All students, will, however, also be asked to contribute to the interdisciplinary forum that equally structures the tilvalg by exchanging their disciplinary investigations. The tilvalg offers an excellent arena for examining global challenges ‘around the clock’. 4) The tilvalg combines theoretical and methodological approaches with a strong focus on how knowledge contributes to solving issues of a global nature. We will not only be investigating challenges, but also the different solutions offered to different challenges. The tilvalg contains a basic orientation towards practice. The approach is not simply conceptual or methodological. All modules are structured around different practices related to meeting and solving global challenges (whether at the level of global governance or locally, whether in the global North or the global South or East, whether by citizens or government institutions). The 10/01/2019 IKS indstillede skitseforslag til nye tilvalg 2020 Side 2 af 28 Side 2 af 5 students will be trained in exploring at challenges with a global outlook and responsibility; they will furthermore be asked to direct their knowledge towards applicability. To support this direction, the tilvalg will draw on didactics of problem-solving and project work. 5) The tilvalg consists of four modules, a 15 ECTS autumn module and three 10 ECTS spring modules. The 15 ECTS autumn module functions both as an entry to the selected global challenges and as an independent module that introduces to the conceptual framework for thinking globally in a world of diversity and to the practical coordinates of acting globally. The Autumn module will provide students with basic knowledge necessary to add a global perspective to their studies and to act as global citizens in a world ridden by global challenges. It is thus targeted both at students continuing on ITTU in the spring semester, at exchange students and at students that choose the full tilvalg. Due to its international setup (teaching in an intercultural setting) and to its focus on global thinking in a world of diversity, it will prepare students to work in teams and on projects that are international. In the spring, the tilvalg investigates specific global challenges that are both serious and in need of solutions such as inequality, migration and governance. In this semester, the students will deepen their knowledge of global challenges and of solutions. 6) The tilvalg will be based on research in global and area studies conducted by the permanent staff af the Dept. of Global Studies. The department covers research on different regions in the world (East Asia, South Asia, Russia, Europe and South America) in disciplines of anthropology, political sciences, international relations, history, cultural studies and political economy. It has a solid track record in transregional and global studies. 7) We have no doubt that global challenges will become ever more present. Questions related to increasing entanglements, to intercultural and transnational exchanges and to structural asymmetries will continuously challenge disciplinary boundaries and everyday practices. As global citizens and specifically as students in the humanities, our students will have to deal with these questions. 10/01/2019 IKS indstillede skitseforslag til nye tilvalg 2020 Side 3 af 28 Side 3 af 5 PRÆSENTATION AF SKITSEFORSLAG FOR TILVALGET Tilvalgets navn: Global Challenges Tilvalgets ophæng i uddannelsesnævn: UN in Global Studies. Tilvalgets vigtigste fagområder og faglige We live in times of increased uncertainties produced by challenges of a global nature. Globalization is the term we use to sigte: address the swiftly growing interconnectedness of people, activities and places. However, globalization is also about the political, ecological and economic problems that all beings are facing. In this tilvalg, we are addressing the sense of crisis and even catastrophe that is rapidly developing around global challenges. Its main purpose is to add global thinking to the societal challenges experienced in different parts of the world. The students will be presented with knowledge and tools making them more aware of global challenges and the urgency of finding solutions beyond local frameworks; that will provide them with a global add-on to their bachelor studies and that will give them a humanistic perspective on these challenges. The tilvalg approaches global challenges in four different ways They are interlinked through the processes of globalization They are urgent They affect different regions and places differently They must be solved at global, regional, national and at local levels The tilvalg in global challenges is divided into four modules Studying global challenges (15 ECTS Autumn course) introduces the theoretical and conceptual framework of the tilvalg with a focus on “global” and “challenges”. It looks at the most pressing challenges that globalization is producing for all living creatures on this earth as manifested in the UN list of global issues. To understand the global nature of challenges, the module introduces theories and concepts, which define different forms of interconnectedness and the consequences they have on peoples’ cultural and material living conditions. This involves examining the unequal consequences related to structural asymmetries caused by historical entanglements in the form of colonialism and to other local variations. The student will develop a critical approach to globalization which involves drawing on local and regional responses as well as solutions to global challenges, thus adding a practical dimension to the tilvalg. Global governance (10 ECTS) aims at studying ways of establishing global governance of global challenges in a changing world order. Multilateral organizations such as the United Nations and financial institutions including the International Monetary Fund or the World Bank are increasingly experiencing pressures from the growing influence of new powers (China, BRIC countries) with the ability to create alternative institutions. The stability of the traditional multilateral governance system is also affected by the failure of the old (Western) global order to redistribute resources, combat poverty and state failure in the global south. This course investigates the interplay and the tensions between different normative ideas of global order (good governance, democracy and human rights) performed in a world of variable resources and powers
