Banned in 1936 by the Third Reich authorities, the Kestner Gesellschaft reopened its gallery in the Warmbüchenstrasse in 1948. The Kestner Gesellschaft began to look for a suitable gallery when the old building became too outdated to meet the technical demands of present- by Axel Hindemith day art exhibitions. The ideal location for the new gallery was found in the center of the city in the former Goseriede Public Baths.
