Humanitarian Assistance Programme (HAP) Weekly Summary Report “On New Responses to Natural Disasters and Follow-up” Reporting Period: From 25 April 2013 – 1 May 2013 Donor: OFDA/USAID Submission Date: 1 May 2013 Incidents Update: During the reporting period 9 natural disaster incidents were reported. Central Region: Kapisa Province: As per initial information from ANDMA, 15 families were reportedly affected by earthquake in 6 districts (Tagab, Alasay, Nijrab, Hisa-i-Duwumi Kohistan, Hisa-i-Awali Kohistanat and Kapisa center) of Kapisa Province on the 24th of April. IOM, CARE, WFP and ANDMA conducted assessment on the 29th of April. 28 families were verified in need of NFIs, emergency shelter and food items. IOM will provide family revitalization and emergency kits on the 2nd of April while WFP will provide food items. In a separate incident on the 25th of April, 35 families were reportedly affected (houses partially damaged) by flash flood in Tagab district (Baba Khail village). Through contacts with the elders and ANDMA we got information that houses were slightly damaged. Their household items were not washed by the flood, thus need for assessment was not evident. Central Highland Region: Ghor Province (Lal Wa Sarjangal district): According to the report from Lal District Governor Office and local community elders, around 36 families are affected as a result of flash flood in Pikhil Jaw Qol village on the 16th of April. ACF and District Governor Office had mobilized their teams to identify the needs of the affected families. In a separate incident on the 14th and 15th of April, as a result of thunderstorm/Lightening, 1 individual injured, 1 died in Lal district. The assessment was finalized by ACF on the 26th of April. As per the findings, 20 houses were moderately damaged, however, their household items and food items were not washed by flood, thus no NFIs and food items were recommended by the team. East Region: Nangarhar Province: An earthquake measuring the magnitude 5.7 hit Nangarhar and Kunar provinces. As per the initial information, the earthquake resulted casualties and destruction of houses in 6 districts of Nangarhar province. 300 houses were damaged, 16 deaths, 126 injured and 26 livestock were killed. As per PDMC decision on the 25th of April, 6 teams consisted of IOM, ANDMA, NRC, IRC, RRD, FGA, CWS, SC, ARCs, NPORA, HNI, and WFP were assigned to conduct assessment of the affected districts. IOM was first aid provider and assisted 126 families on the 27th and 30th of April with the provision of 126 family revitalization kits and 52 emergency shelter kits. The distribution was conducted in the presence of Deputy Governor, Officials from Vice President Office, PGO Nangarhar, Jalalabad, distribution of relief items to earthquake spokesperson, Head of ANDMA and Heads of other line departments. For affected families, IOM, 27 April, 2013 detailed information please refer to table 1.1; In a separate incident on the 29th of April, as a result of flash flood, 53 families were reportedly affected in Jalalabad and Bishsud districts. IOM is in the process of coordinating the assessment with partners and will soon initiate the assessment of the affected families. IOM together with Kunar ANDMA, IMC and WFP started the assessment of the affected areas on the 24th of April. Due to earthquake this assessment was postponed. As a result of earthquake, approx. 376 families were reportedly affected in 5 districts (Khas Kunar, Nurgal, Chawki, Sarkano, Wata pur) of Kunar province. 2 deaths and 15 injuries were also reported. IOM, ANDMA, IMC and WFP started assessment of the affected families on the 25th of April. 141 families were verified in need of NFIs and emergency shelter, while 434 families were in need of food items in Khas Kunar. IOM provided family revitalization and emergency shelter kits to 141 families on the 30th April, while WFP committed to provide food items to 434 families. 79 families were identified by ARCS in Chawki district and this organization will provide them NFIs and food items. 60 families were verified and will be assisted by IMC in Nurgal district. One person died in Arghandab district. The incident has also resulted in destruction and damages to agricultural land/crops. An ad hoc coordination meeting held on the 24th of April to form a joint assessment team. The team started assessment on the 25th of April, though the assessment is ongoing, however the initial information of the assessment indicates that the heavy rainfall and hail has resulted in damages to agricultural land, crops, gardens (wheat, grapes) while no houses were damaged. An extraordinary DMC meeting was held on the 28th of April. A joint assessment team consisted of IOM, WFP IP (AREA), ANDMA, and ARCS started assessment on the 29th of April. 50 families were identified in need of NFIs and food items, IOM will provide NFIs after coordination with partners. Nahr-e-Shahi District: A joint assessment was carried out by NRC, IOM, UNICEF, ARCS, SC, ANDMA and DoRR on the 24th – 26th April and the outcomes indicated that in total 2,214 families were affected in 8 villages.
