Light Classical Contents A few highlights 1 Background stories 1 Light Classical – Title order 2 Light Classical – Composer order 7 Light Classical – Pianist order 14 The 200 MIDI files in this category contain works often identified as ‘salon’ music. These are generally short pieces, often with virtuosic display and always with a tune. Music of this type is rarely heard today, so some of the items in this category may be unfamiliar. Many of the works were written in the 19th century, some are from the early 20th century. Because ‘light classical’ embodies more than salon music, works such as Rhapsody in Blue, and In A Monastery Garden are included. Earliest recordings are from 1907. Of the 125 composers in this category, the best known are Cécile Chaminade, Franz Bendel, Rudolf Friml, Benjamin Godard, Victor Herbert, Fritz Kreisler, Moritz Moszkowski, Ethelbert Nevin and Johann Strauss. Over 100 pianists play the works in this category. These include in-house pianists such as Robert Armbruster, Genevieve Pitot, Howard Brockway, Edgar Fairchild (née Milton Suskind) and Marguerite Volavy. Well known pianists include Sergei Rachmaninoff, Moriz Rosenthal, Vladimir de Pachmann, Josef Lhevinne and Josef Hofmann. A few highlights Annie Laurie (Transcription) arranged and played by Mischa Levitzki Blue Danube Arabesque by Strauss Schulz-Evler played by Josef Lhevinne Die Lorelei Op.2 by Hans Seeling, played by Clarence Adler Glow Worm by Paul Lincke, played by Harry Perrella Egeria Op.35 by Ernest Kroeger, played by Robert Armbruster Enchanted Nymph by Mischa Levitzki, played by the composer Flight of the Bumble Bee by Rimsky-Korsakoff, played by Sergei Rachmaninoff In A Boat (En Bateau) by Camille Zeckwer, played by Leo Ornstein In A Monastery Garden by Albert William Ketèlbey, played by Frank J. Black Reverie Op.18 in G by Carlos Salzedo (a famous harpist), played by the composer Song of the Sea by Harriet Ware, played by Frank Milne The Sanctuary by Michael Dvorsky (Hofmann) played by Josef Hofmann. Background stories 1. Harriet Ware (1877-1962) is one of the few female composers of the times to have achieved some level of fame in her lifetime. Another is Cécile Chaminade. Ware’s Song of the Sea was published in 1910, but did not appear on reproducing piano roll until 1937 when it was recorded by popular piano roll artist Frank Milne (1887-1959). 2. Josef Lhévinne (1874-1944) recorded the Schulz-Evler transcription Blue Danube Arabesque in 1906 for Welte, for Ampico in 1926 and on disc for Victor in 1928. All these recordings are highly regarded. 3. Genevieve Pitot (1901-1980) only recorded for the Duo-Art reproducing piano, making nearly 45 recordings from 1919 to the late 1920s. She studied with Alfred Cortot at age 12, and all her recordings are highly regarded for their stylistic playing and technique. 4. Charles Steinway (1857-1919) was President of Steinway & Sons. He composed a number of salon pieces for the piano, recording some of these for the Welte-Mignon around 1916. He was a grandson of the founder of the firm. 5. Marguerite Volavy (1886-1951) was a prolific recording artist for numerous piano roll companies. She made many roll recordings, sometimes using pseudonyms such as Felix Gerdts and George Kerr. It is estimated that she made over 230 roll recordings. She studied with Leschetizky, and appeared as soloist with the Russian Symphony Orchestra in New York on February 13 1915, and again on March 21 1915, playing the first American performance of Scriabin’s Prometheus—A Poem of Fire performing on a ‘chromola’, otherwise known as a ‘colour keyboard’. 1 Contents page Light Classical – Title order Composer order Pianist order Light Classical – Title order Title Composer Pianist Roll Issue/ tim midi file name No. rec e date A Dream Bartlett-Roth Roth X-6664 03 1924 2:37 A Dream (Bartlett) Roth LW A La Bien Aimee Concert Waltz Schuett Bauer 6986 03 1926 5:11 A La Bien Aimee (Schuett) Bauer DA Aeolian Murmurings (Concert Aeolian Murmurings (Bartlett), Thompson Bartlett Thompson 5797 07 1916 3:28 Study) Op.123 DA Aeolus Op.59 No.5 Gernsheim Goodson 72600 10 1928 2:04 Aeolus (Gernsheim), Goodson DA Air de Ballet Herbert Harris B-7408 07 1926 2:37 Air de Ballet (Herbert) Harris LW Album Leaf Merkel-Depew Battle 6360 11 1920 3:35 Album Leaf (Merkel), Battle DA Alice Where Art Thou Ascher Spross 5990 03 1918 6:05 Alice (Ascher), Spross DA Alpine Storm Op.105 Kunkel Pitot 6799 10 1924 5:38 Alpine Storm (Kunkel) Pitot DA Alp-Maid's Dream (Idyll) Op.45 Labitzky Rogers 6312 07 1920 3:10 Alp-Maids Dream (Labitzky) Rogers DA Amaryllis Seger Volavy 57213 ? 2:33 Amaryllis (Seger) Volavy A Ambling Along Axt Axt 67891 08 1927 2:47 Ambling Along (Axt), Axt A Amour Coquet (Vagrant Love) Friml Friml 66513 09 1926 3:53 Amour Couquet (Friml), Friml A Amoureuse Berger Brockway 55205 ? 4:42 Amoureuse (Berger) B'way A An Evening in Granada Bilotti Bilotti X-6886 11 1924 3:16 An Evening in Granada (Bilotti) Bilotti LW Angel’s Serenade, The Braga Fairchild 62423 09 1923 5:03 Angel's Serenade (Braga) Fairchild A Annie Laurie (Transcription) Levitzki arr Levitzki 1411 08 1924 3:44 Annie Laurie, Levitzki AA Arabesque Op.52, No.2 Arnold Volavy 51004 1916 3:28 Arabesque (Arnold), Volavy A Arabesque Intermezzo Loth Loth 68991 06 1928 2:18 Arabesque (Loth), Loth AB Artists Life Waltz Strauss Volavy 70273 10 1929 5:44 Artists Life (Strauss) Volavy A At Dawn (L’Laurore) Op.36 No.1 Friml Volavy 67103 01 1927 2:00 At Dawn Op 36-1 (Friml), Volavy A At Dawning (I Love You) Cadman Cadman 5853 01 1917 2:15 At Dawning (Cadman), Cadman DA At the Lake of Geneva Op.131 Bendel Lambert 6420 05 1921 4:12 At the Lake Geneva (Bendel) Lambert DA No.1 Autumn Leaves Op.146 (Feuilles 09 1923 Autumn Leaves (Chaminade), Chmnde Chaminade Chaminade 066 br 3:24 d'Automne) by DA Ave Maria Bach-Gounod Lerner 100575 10 1930 3:19 Ave Maria (Bach-Gounod), Lerner AB Ave Maria Op.52 No.6 Schubert Volavy 69673 02 1929 7:32 Ave Maria (Schbrt), Volavy AB Awakening of the Lion (Caprice Kontski, Pitot 72119 02 1928 7:37 Awakening of Lion (Kontski) Pitot DA Heroique) Op.115 Antoine de Badinage Herbert Adler 5694 11 1915 3:47 Badinage (Herbert), Adler DA Ballet Des Papillons Op.69 Godard, C.
