Welcome to Copenhagen! The Organizing Committee in Copenhagen and the International Scientific Committee of the XXIII FESSH Congress had four important goals: A high standard of scientific content; an optimized E-poster presentation; the inclusion of some more unusual topics and, a focus on the younger generation of hand surgeons. We hope that we have succeeded. A high number of invited lecturers – several coming from other parts of the world and working in other medical specialties - have unselfishly accepted to honour the Congress with their presence and presentations, despite the extremely limited financial support that we could offer. The number of abstracts submitted was higher than ever. Regretfully, although we opened one more lecture room than planned, we were forced to limit the number of free oral presentations. The “good old days” when we could stroll around, peacefully browsing the posters are gone; we have to adapt to a digitalized world. We have optimized the E-poster utility through careful selection and categorization with an increased number of reading stations and availability online. There is a special session for young hand surgeons entitled “Hand Surgery at the Frontier”, as well as a session of free papers “from young hand surgeons to young hand surgeons”. The topic for the Instructional Course is “Fractures of the Hand and Carpus”. When selecting this topic, although we were primarily thinking of our younger colleagues, we believe that senior experts will benefit from it. The course book was realized in a perfect collaboration with our publishers Thieme and with the generous contributions of many prominent experts. Of course, all these achievements would have been impossible without the support and contributions of the medical industry. And so, thank you to the submitters, lecturers, supporters and participants… We hope that you will enjoy your stay in the wonderful city of Copenhagen and, when you leave, that you will feel enriched in your knowledge and passion of our fantastic medical subspecialty. Copenhagen welcomes you! Michel Boeckstyns president of the congress 4 WELCOME MESSAGE SECRetaRY GENERAL OF FESSH Dear Colleagues, On behalf of FESSH Council we would like to invite you to participate in the XXIII FESSH Congress in Copenhagen „Working for the future“. The annual congress of FESSH is the largest hand surgery meeting in Europe with a very interesting programme with the Instructional Course on „Fractures of the hand and carpus“, round tables and invited lectures from all over the world. Future is not only new techniques, but also the next generation and some sessions are specially devoted to young hand surgeons with lectures and free papers. Teaching and training is one of the most important goals and in order to make all contents available also after the meeting, for the first time, the presentations will be streamed online and uploaded on the website. During the congress we will also have the Delegates Assembly and I sincerely hope that all of you are going to join this central event of our Federation. You are the one making the FESSH and we look forward to your ideas and proposals. The president of the congress, Michel Boeckstyns, the Organising Committee and the Scientific Committee have been working hard in the last years to prepare a wonderful event in a wonderful city and we are looking forward to your participation.
