Sand sculptor Jino van Bruinessen created a TARDIS and they played the Doctor Who theme. The sculpture was sheltered from inclement rain by a canopy, and had fortunately appeared above the tide line. The then Australian Broadcasting Commission bought Doctor Who in 1964, but censorship problems caused it to be held over to time slots after 19.30 in 1965. ABC was beaten to transmission by the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation AKTV-2 (Aukland) on 18 September 1964. On 12 January 1965, ABW-2 screened An Unearthly Child in Perth. The show was next seen on ABN-2 (Sydney, also ABC-3 Canberra) on 15 January, ABQ-2 (Brisbane) on 22 January and ABV-2 (Melbourne) on 20 February. Adelaide’s ABS-2 had to wait until 15 March and Hobart (ABT-2) didn’t get the series until 18 June. Darwin got television in 1971 and ABD-6 began Fury from the Deep on 15 August.
