2017 WE CONNECT THE AMERICAS Americas Society and Council of the Americas bring together the public and private sectors to discuss critical issues affecting the Western Hemisphere and to advance their common agenda of economic and social development, open markets, the rule of law, and democracy in the region. Dear Members and Friends, 2017 was a year of transformation for the Americas. In Washington, a new administration reassessed its global role, sparked NAFTA’s renegotiation, and redrew immigration policy. As the United States pivots in a new direction, Latin America faces its own wave of change. Six countries including its three most populous—Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia— are scheduled to hold presidential elections in 2018 that in some cases may signal a major shift in social and economic policy and even relations with neighbors. Corruption and governance are at the heart of the concerns for voters who cry for improved economic performance, real accountability, and greater transparency from their leaders. In Venezuela, a humanitarian crisis looms as economic and social indicators continue to worsen amid political strife. In these times, AS/COA’s role of fostering dialogue and strengthening hemispheric ties is more crucial than ever before. Our Latin American Cities Conferences offer an unparalleled platform for public and private exchange. Our Venezuela Working Group shares insights into the country’s significant challenges. Our flagship publication Americas Quarterly has established itself as a must-read for leaders and influencers. Our programming across the hemisphere renews our commitment to young professionals and working women—groups in whose hands the region’s future lies. And our Music and Visual Arts programs make our landmark headquarters New York’s most respected and vibrant space for Latin American arts and culture. As we look to the year ahead and beyond, we are excited to engage our members and board members, sponsors and donors, and our constituencies in the broader community. We appreciate your support and invite you to join us in our work to promote a more peaceful, prosperous, and inclusive hemisphere. Andrés Gluski Susan L.
