The Scholarship is inspired by the life and work of Jacquie Jones who dedicated her life to the development and growth of diverse content creators, and the creation of projects that serve the needs of all communities that encourage dialogue, nurture respect and promote understanding. Through funding provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Black Public Media is administering $300,000 in grants for the development and production of multi- platform content projects for public media distribution from emerging and diverse media makers as part of its continued commitment to future generations of diverse storytellers. PROFESSIONAL WORK EXPERIENCE Series Director October 2018 – Present Family Pictures USA, ChimPanzee Prod./PBS/ITVS Family Pictures USA is a television series & transmedia project that explores neighborhoods & cities through the lens of the family photo album. Hosted by Thomas Allen Harris, this public television series enlarges our understanding of history, our diversity, and our shared values. The series is due to air on PBS in June of 2019 with WGCU and UNC-TV as presenting stations. I facilitated the series production in the field working with the host and crew to capture storylines and help develop the projects style with the executive producers. This also involved maintaining and delivering the series on schedule and within the budget, filming storylines, working with local PBS affiliated staff and local talent. The project required communicating with staff on the daily objectives related to the production. Setting up shoots and making sure that the project maintained high production values necessary for a national PBS show. We were able to complete principal photography on two hour-long episodes in five weeks. This required coordinating multiple locations and filming 10-12 subjects for each episode. Series Director & Creator January 2015 – Present POPS, ITVS Digital/PBS Digital Studios Pops is a documentary web series that examines the parenting experiences of African American men. I created and facilitated the series production from concept to final delivery. This involved maintain and delivering the series on time and on budget, researching storylines, shooting, and editing. I also contracted third parties for music and image properties, hired freelance contractors, delivered rough and final cuts for approval, including supervising the edits. The 11 episode series launched in October of 2017 and has over 50,000 views and almost 100K website visits at www.pops.life. I spoke at SXSW 2018 on a panel discussing how to create documentary web series and I also coordinate the social media accounts for the series. Freelance Producer July 2018 – Present United Negro College Fund The United Negro College Fund commissioned a series of videos for their STEM Scholars/FUND II Foundation program and their UNCF/KOCH Scholars program that I won a bid to develop, produce and edit. I delivered a series of six videos while managing a crew of four freelance staffers on time and on budget. Freelance Field Videographer July 2009 – Present PBS News Hour The PBS NewsHour is an hour-long evening news broadcast, offers news updates, analysis, live studio interviews, discussions and foreign and domestic reports to put the day's news in context. As a third party contractor, my principal responsibility involved shooting interviews and live events at remote locations for programming related to the show. In addition to shooting productions required lighting interview subjects and correspondents, recording audio and at times editing. My project contributions include, Artists taking on America’s history of violence, Freedom Schools, SAT testing, The Pope visits New York. Freelance Field Producer & Videographer August 2009 – December 2017 Time.com Time.com video division provides global and national news and online content related to the publication. I specialized as a third party shooter/field producer/editor for producers at Time’s NY and DC Divisions. This involved coordinating offsite shoots with subjects to execute production-planning goals assigned by supervising producers. All of the contracted projects required me to light and shoot interviews with or without correspondents, complete some editing and deliver footage to New York (usually within the same day). My past contribution to projects includes Millennial Priests, the Nest Thermostat Bill McDonough interview, 10 Questions Robert Groves, Why President Obama is Mr. Unpopular, Joe Biden Person of the Year, US Air Guitar National Finals. 2nd Camera OPerator May 2017 – August 2017 Breaking Big, OZY.com & PBS In Breaking Big, OZY explores how some of the world’s most influential artists, innovators, athletes, and leaders pushed, prodded and cajoled the big breaks that would make their careers. This series of twelve 30-minute documentary-style films traces the unusual paths to stardom followed by a dozen talented men and women who overcame nearly insurmountable obstacles and long odds to break big. Co-CinematograPher June 2016 – July 2016 Tell Them We Are Rising, PBS Tell them we are rising is a documentary produced by Firelight media and award-winning director Stanley Nelson. The documentary follows the history of historically black colleges and universities from their inception to the modern times. Freelance Producer March 2016 – October 2016 University of Florida Developed, budgeted and produced a series of training videos titled “Critical Thinking in Dysphagia Management: Blazing a New Clinical Trail (1.55 ASHA CEUs)”, for Drs. Ianessa Humbert and Emily Plowman at the University of Florida. The project required attendee interactive audience participation, testimonials, live hands on demonstrations and patient/physician interactions. After winning a contract bid I worked with staff to create a set of educational videos that incorporate the panel discussions in a documentary style format. We filmed each of the breakout panels and discussions centered on the agenda. My primary responsibilities required filming, supervising and mentoring a production staff of 6-8 people in South Carolina, plan an implement shooting schedules, coordinate project storylines and negotiate some budget needs for staff. I also managed the relationships with the school district and selected subjects, oversaw and regulated weekly meetings between the South Carolina and Washington DC production staff. I helped reviewed production goals and offered input to solve project concerns that developed over the course of production. 180 Days Hartsville aired nationally as part of the CPB and PBS American Graduate initiative.
