Gakugeigakubu Course Title: Oceanian Studies Instructor: Hironari Narita Class type Lecture License・Qualification: None Time Offered Spring Years Offered 3・4 Credit 2 Req./Elective Elective Overview and Methods: The aim of this class is for students to learn several aspects of Oceania areas through case studies, mainly focusing on Australia. This area is close to Japan, so we need to learn the historical relationship and cultural differences. This class will be taught using a combination of lecture, and in-class discussions to check the meaning and understanding of the material given in the class. Goals/Objective of class: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to (a) understand the importance of Oceanian culture, (b) explain what the ethnic groups in Oceania face to, (c) think how to develop the relationship between Japan and Australia , etc. Study Requirements: Students need to express themselves to actively participate in class. This course gives the material for students to consider. Therefore, students will need to pre-read class material to prepare questions and opinions on the subject matter to share in class discussions. Post class students will need to reflect, re-read material for a better understanding, and write their weekly reflection. Evaluation Methods: In order to be successful in this course, students will need to complete the following: (1)pass the quizzes 20%, (2)complete homework from the distributed papers 20% (3)give the presentation of one selective topic during the semester 20%.
