For example, a foothill stream may support as many as 16 species (12 native and 4 exotic). There are 29 native fish species present in the basin. Additionally the Napa River historically supported thicktail chub (extinct), Sacramento perch (extirpated), coho salmon (extirpated), and chum salmon have recently been caught (status is unknown). A total of 14 native species are known to occur in the valley floor and upstream. There are 22 non-native fish species known to occur in the basin. American shad (Alosa sapidissima) has been captured in the estuary on a couple of occasions but likely does not regularly occur in the river. Brown Trout were captured in 1997 (Leidy), but they have not been documented by recent efforts and likely do not occur or are very uncommon. A total of 14 non-native species occur in the valley and upstream. No non-native fish species occur in high gradient mountain streams. Reservoirs within the Napa River basin contain additional fish species, which are planted for sportfishing or other reasons. These species may occasionally colonize tributary streams or be washed downstream and become temporarily established in suitable stream habitats.
