Of course all such organisations need vol- PROGRESS unteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you ASSOCIATION have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome join us and meet in the help achieve them. Inverleigh Public Hall Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include: on the 4th Tuesday of each month @7 :30pm The Federation Bridge which was built to commemorate the centenary of (Except January) Federation in 2001. Walking Tracks were established with lots of support from the community, including VISITORS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME fencing and tree planting. Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council President: Hilary Hamilton to have the old toilets removed and a new block built, which did not Secretary: Luanne Thornton detract from the entrance to our town. They are used more than any Treasurer: Tony Waayers other toilets in the Shire. We are most grateful to the many people who have kept 0n the 4th Monday of each Month @ 8pm the Historical Society in mind as they sorted through their own collec- (Except December & January) tions. VISITORS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME We undertake many interesting projects and have enjoyable President: Katrina Robson meetings, which you are welcome to attend. Peter’s Editorial Well friends- I’m officially exhausted! Pulling together all the information for this months edition has been quite an effort with so much going on in the district. It’s market season again as you know, and markets in Inverleigh, Teesdale and Bannockburn give us all plenty of opportunity to prepare for the coming festive season. The 100th anniversay of signing the Armistice at the conclusion of World War 1 is significant to us all, for without it, where would we be. We live in a land of freedom, freedom of speech, freedom of education, freedom of religion and worship. The 11th hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month is really special this year and I trust you all reflect on the sacrifice of so many so that we can enjoy the freedom we have today. Please pay a visit to the Inverleigh RSL Rooms to see the wonderful display of the hand make Poppies. Thanks to the locals who have organised this display and to those who made poppies. They will also be on display at the RSL Memorial Dinner Dance on the 10th Nov and at the Rememberance Service at the Inverleigh Monuments on the 11th. Please enjoy this edition of the Leigh News-there is a lot to read and a lot of information for you. leigh news 3 ARMISTICE DAY CELEBRATIONS-11th NOVEMBER ASSEMBLE AT THE INVERLEIGH RSL AT 10:15 FOR A PARADE TO THE INVERLEIGH MEMORIALS LEAD BY PIPER-GEOFF JONES AND GEELONG MEMORIAL BRASS BAND LEAD BY ROGER WHITEHAND SERVICE AT THE MEMORIALS - FLORAL TRIBUTES TO BE LAYED SILENT TRIBUTE AT 11AM Armistice Day (Remembrance Day as it is now posed the Central Powers of Germany, Austria-Hun- known) 100 years centenary of the signing of the doc- gary, Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria during the First ument to end the First World War conflict which had World War) seen a terrible loss of civilian and military personnel this Australia had a population of fewer than 5 mil- signing will be observed at 11am on the 11th November lion at the time of the outbreak of the First World War 2018 around the World 416,809 men enlisted of which over 60,000 were killed The total number of Military and Civilian casu- and 156,000 wounded, gassed or taken prisoner( the alties in World War 1 was about 40 million, estimates latest figure given of those killed is 62,000) range from 15-19 million deaths and around 23 mil- 114,000 Victorians enlisted 89,000 served abroad of lion wounded military personnel ranking it among the which 19,000 were killed. deadliest conflicts in human history. Many died not On the 11th Day of 11th Month at the 11th from combat but from diseases caused by war, a figure hour let us pause and pay Silent Tribute to all those estimated at around 2 million, 6 million people went Service men of the First Wold War and all the Ser- missing during the war presumed dead. NOVEMBER MARKET Sunday the 18th 9am to 1pm Lawsons Park Inverleigh Free Face Painting, Lots of Food and Plenty of Stalls! For all stallholder or general enquiries please contact us by either: Website - www.inverleighmarket.com Email - [email protected] INVERLEIGH’S TOWN ENTRANCE PROJECT WORK HAS COMMENCED Work has commenced at the sites on the 23rd October af- ter a lot of planning! Local excavator Aaron Peel marvelled us with his mechanical dexterity, picking up massive boulders like they were sugar-cubes! Speed limits have temporarily changed on the Hamilton Highway; with the 80km zone reduced to 60km. Coun- cil worker Sharon McDonald attended the first day to approve the extensive foundations and reo framework. Then @19cubic metres was poured with precision and enthusiasm by local Ray Sarcevic from Go Hard Concreting. At each end of Inverleigh township; 2 stones each weighing 3-4 tonnes are now concreted; which are the ends of the 2.4m high x 1.2m deep walls. All involved are pleased with the progress. Stonemason David Long predicts the careful, precise stonework will be completed in 4 weeks or so – so please respect his workplace if you approach the site by adhering to OHS rules of “high vis” clothing. Any locals wanting to include their own stone in these historical walls, please deliver to Eliza Peel , and not di- rectly on site. It may just be a few small pieces we include as ‘heartstone’ inside the wall, larger ‘icecream container-size’ pieces, or a traditional coping stone that will be placed (and secretly concreted) on top; measuring roughly 30cm high x 40 long x 25 wide in a rough semi-circle. Anyone wanting to include something (small please!) in the time capsule that will be included in the stonework, please deliver to: Eliza Peel; 043835143 or P O Box 110, Inverleigh, 3321 by 2nd November. 6 Leigh News printed on carbon neutral paper WHY I LOVE TO LIVE WHERE I LIVE WINNERS Jessica- Year 3 First Prize $25.
