The Thai team’s success also proves that the futsal powerhouses can no longer assure themselves of glory at the continental level. Thailand national team defeated Iran in the epic semi-final of the AFC Futsal Championship last year and Chonburi Bluewave went a step ahead to clinch the title. Club competition is the base of national teams and in order to raise the profile of our national futsal teams, we started this competition in 2010 with nine teams. I am happy to note that teams from 13 countries took part in the qualifiers of this edition of the competition which shows the growing interest of our MAs in club futsal. The skills and determination displayed by all the eight teams in this competition are praiseworthy. In our bid to develop and improve the game from the technical perspective, AFC has undertaken a technical analysis of the tournament through a panel of technical experts. This technical report will be useful in further development of the players, coaches, instructors and educators based on data collected during the tournament. We would also like to thank all the members involved in the compilation of this report and the Japan Football Association for hosting a memorable tournament. The AFC Futsal Committee decided to conduct assessment visits to Member Associations to get a better understanding of the level of futsal throughout Asia, from the top nations that participate in the AFC Futsal Club Championship to those fledgling nations who are just starting to develop the game in their country. These assessment visits not only allows the AFC’s futsal development team to provide guidelines for MAs to systematically evaluate their futsal development status it also enables the AFC to gauge a Member Association’s capability for participating in the AFC Futsal Club Championship. Iran and Japan are seen as the two MAs that are setting the standard for futsal development in Asia thanks to their well-structured futsal pyramid and competitive, top-tier leagues, which has already seen teams from these nations win the AFC Futsal Club Championship. And the significance of an MA having a strong domestic league was there for all to see here in Japan, where Chonburi Bluewave from Thailand joined Iranian sides Foolad Mahan and Sanaye Giti Pasand as well as Japan’s Nagoya Oceans as teams to have claimed the AFC Futsal Club Championship trophy. A major contributing factor to Chonburi’s success was unquestionably that they take part in a strong Thai Futsal Premier League which proves that a healthy, competitive league can help lay the foundations for success. In 2014 the AFC futsal team will continue its mission of assessment visits to those nations who are participating in the AFC Futsal Club Championship and potential MAs who have an established futsal structure.
