I. The Didactic Love-poems. These mark the final stage of Ovid's first poetical period, his previous achievements in love-poetry being the Amores, which describe his own experiences, and the Letters of the Heroines.! It seems to have been an original idea of the poet's to include love-making among the subjects of didactic poetry, examples of which are to be found in the philosophical poems of Empedocles or Lucretius, and the treatises of a Macer on herbs or of a Manilius on astronomy.
