It was published by Nintendo and first released on November 24, 1999. This is a sequel to the Donkey Kong Country trilogy, and is still the only game in the series without the word Country in the title. It received generally positive reviews with an average score of 88% according to GameRankings. The game requires the use of Expansion Pak in order to function, and was the first Nintendo 64 game to do so. The game has a single player mode (adventure) and a multiplayer mode (Kong Battle). The story of the game takes place after the events of the Donkey Kong Country series, or, to be more specific, Donkey Kong Land 3. King K. Ruhl returns to a giant mechanical island with a large weapon called Blast-O-Matic to destroy donkey Kong Island. However, due to the incompetence of the crew on board, the island falls and Blast-O-Matic malfunctions. To win some time, K. Ruhl has his soldiers capture Diddy Kong (after he defied and fought the entire Kremling Krew on his own), Lanky Kong, Tiny Kong and Chunky Kong and locked them up. He also has his henchmen steal a treasure trove of Donkey Kong golden bananas. Squawks informs Donkey Kong about the disappearance of his treasure and the Conga, and then donkey tells Cranky what happened immediately after that. After entering the training barrels of Cranky under the command of Cranky, he is given a potion: Simian Slam. The donkey is also said to buy fifteen banana medals for a special surprise. The donkey then uses his newly purchased potion to emerge from inside Donkey Kong Island. Unfortunately, all other areas outside are blocked, except for the island attached to the mechanical island of K. Rula. There, donkey meets K. Lamsi, a giant Critter who disobeyed the tyrannical king's orders to wreak havoc on the island of Donkey Kong. When the donkey agrees to release him, K. Lamsi dances in joy and displaces the boulder on donkey Kong island, which blocks the first world: The Jungle Japes. The Donkey then acquires his first Golden Banana. He uses this to pass B. Locker, which must have a certain amount of golden bananas shown so he can grant entry. In this case, the guardian only needs one. As soon as the donkey arrives at Jungle Japes, Squawks asks him to collect loose bananas before going to Troff n' Scoff portal. He then goes to find his golden bananas. Along the way, he reunites with Funky Kong, who now runs an ammunition store, meets Snide, a Blast-O-Matic technician who asks for his drawings on his car so he can help Kongs, enter his first Battle Arena and Crown and save Diddy, who helps him in his free banana and golden banana quest. After that he he he Portal Troff n' Scoff and exchanges sixty free bananas to fight with the army of Dillo, which holds the first key to the cage K. Lamsi. The Donkey and Diddy then return the first key to K. Lamsey, and this time the temple, which houses the entrance to the Angry Aztecs, is open. Before they enter, they must show five golden bananas to B. Locker. Inside the world, the duo reunite with Candy, who offers them tools and second melons to make their adventures a little easier. Donkey and Diddy then rescue Tiny and Lanky and collect their golden bananas and loose bananas. Diddy then gives away a hundred and twenty free bananas to Troff n' Scoff to face off against Dogadon, the second key guardian of K. Lumsy. Four Kongs return the second key to K. Lamsey, and he lifts the platform and opens the doorway that leads to the entrance to the Frantic Factory, and opens the gate to the gloomy galleon. Before that, Tiny Kong pays a visit to banana fairy who asks Tiny to get twenty fairies using a magic camera. Four people (or four simian as it may be) the group must show fifteen Golden Bananas B. Locker before access can be granted to The Frantic Factory. There, Lanky frees Chunky and four to do the same as usual: collect your free bananas and find their golden bananas. Donkey Kong also has to play the arcade game Donkey Kong twice to get the Nintendo Coin, which will become important later. Tiny Kong then issues two hundred bananas and encounters Mad Jack, the third key keeper of K. Lamsey. Then Kongs show thirty golden bananas to B. Locker at the entrance to the Gloomy Galleon. Five do the same tasks they should have done in previous worlds. The Kongs then acquire fifteen banana medals and play Jetpac to acquire The Rareware Coin, which, like the Nintendo Coin, will be important later. Lanky then gives 250 bananas to Troff n' Scoff to face off against Pufftross, the fourth key guardian of K. Lumsy. Then five Kongs return to K. Lumsy, who destroys a boulder that hides a cannon that shoots towards a floating island that is the entrance to the Mushroom Forest. The group shows fifty Golden Bananas to pass B. Locker. Inside the world there are two switches that change the time of day: one at noon, the other at midnight. They are crucial in getting some golden bananas and loose bananas. In addition, Kongs get an interesting update from Funky: ammo that can home on enemies. Chunky then hands out 300 bananas to meet Ugadon from Angry Aztec, who also holds the fifth key to K. Lamsey's cage. The Congi then returns to K. Lamsi, and he opens a boulder from donkey Kong Island, where the entrance to the Crystal Caves is located, and displaces a boulder that contains a cannon that contains a gun that to the entrance to The Creepy Castle. Five Kongs then show sixty-five-five B. Locker. Here, Kongs get their third melon from candy. Congs get their last individual potions. Tiny's Monkeyport ability, provided by Kranka, allows her to use special pads that teleport her to special areas that others cannot reach. It is used to stop the rather giant Kosha, which knocks stalactites to thwart Kongs. The donkey then feeds Troff N' Scoff 350 bananas and collides with the army of Dillo, who also has the 6th key to the cage of K. Lamsey. Then the congis return to K. Lamsey and head to a creepy castle where they must show eighty bananas to B. Locker. This is the largest and most complex world. There is a demon that haunts the tunnels, many undead Kremlings roam around, and some places have echoes of laughter. Kongs are also getting the latest from their updates here. All Kongs then feed Scoff N' Troff 400 bananas to confront King Kut Out, a cardboard image of King K. Ruhl that fires lasers to get the 7th key to the K. Lamsey cage. Five Kongs then finish collecting items on the island. The congis return to K. Lamsey, and the door to Helm Sanctuary is open. Unfortunately, K. Ruhl is aware of the presence of his enemies and launches Blast-o-Matic. Fortunately, by collecting Blast-o-Matic drawings, Snide can delay the sequence to fifty minutes. This gives the Congs enough time to disable power by defeating the problem. They also collect banana medals. When the car shuts down, the door to K. Ruol opens. Before they enter, Diddy acquires the last crown from the last arena. The group comes in later, but K. Ruhl runs in Flying Croc. They acquire the 8th and final key to the K. Lamsey cage with Nintendo and Rareware coins. Congs also catch the last fairy. Shortly afterwards, they finally free K. Lumsy, who explores the island. When he sees The Flying Croc, he follows him out of curiosity. K. Lamsey then trips over the cliff and swats the escape vehicle to the island. Five Kongs find the crash site of the island and enter through the bottom. Kongs then have to beat K. Ruhl in a boxing match where Kongs use their special abilities to knock down K. Ruhl, with Chunky dealing the final blow. King K. Ruhl soon tries to escape from the arena, but he is deceived by Candy, Funky and Cranky, who send him to fly out of the arena and leave the D.C. Islands for good after defeating K. Ruhl, Kongs and a few friends to celebrate victory at the home of DK, the closing game.
