Approximately 1,700 new children's track booksappear on this anno- tated list. Literary and artistic qualitywere the primary criteria for book selec- tion applied by the current Committeeon the Elementary School book- list of the National Council of Teachersof English. Attention was also gitren to characteristics of the booksthat might influence their appeal for children. The committee has conscientiouslyattempted to ensure that books dealing with minoritie.,are accurate and of good quality. As in the previous edition, quality booksfrom the past have been recog- nized in lists appended to each majorsection of the booklist. Some of these books may be available only in librarycollections.
