It represents all the 1996 Census information available . The information listed within this guide is categorised into four parts. There is Dwelling , Family, Personal , and Geographic information. Generally within each part, the variables are arranged alphabetically. iii HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE To order customised tables from the 1996 Census of Population and Dwellings, it is important that you specify exactly what you want. There are 5 key components to any table request. They are: (1) Census Year , e.g. 1996 (2) Subject Population , e.g. Population Resident in NZ (3) Areas , e.g. Area Unit of Usual Residence (4) Variable Name “Age Group Standard 5 Yearly with Broad Coverage” (5) Number of Categories for each Variable, e.g. (15) Examples The following examples list the table specifications required to produce the tables listed on the following pages. Example 1 Regional Council of Usual Residence (16),) Sex (3) by Age Group (18) for Population Resident in New Zealand Example 2 Territorial Local Authority of Usual Residence (76), Age Group (12) and Sex (3) by Industry (Major Division,) (11) for Population Resident in New Zealand Aged 15 Years and Over Gainfully Employed in the Full-time and Part-time Labour Force. Example 3 Number of Bedrooms (10) by Number of Occupants (9) for Private Dwellings iv SUBJECT POPULATIONS Total Population - This refers to persons present at the place of enumeration on census night including overseas visitors in NZ on census night. Excluded are NZ Residents who are temporarily out of the country on census night and NZ Armed Forces serving overseas on census night. Total Population Aged 15 Years and Over - As above for persons aged 15 years and over. Population Resident in New Zealand - Consists of Persons in NZ on census night who usually reside in NZ. Population Resident in New Zealand Aged 15 Years and Over - Consists of Persons in New Zealand on census night, aged 15 years and over who usually reside in NZ. Overseas Population - Persons in NZ on census night who usually reside overseas. Population Resident in New Zealand Aged 15 Years and Over Gainfully Employed in Full-time and Part-time Labour Force - Refers to persons usually resident in New Zealand employed in the full-time or part-time labour force. It excludes persons who are unemployed and seeking work and those persons in the non-labour force. Dwellings - A dwelling is any building or structure which is used as living quarters by a household of one or more persons on census night. It is usually self-contained in respect of sleeping, cooking, bathing and toilet facilities. It can be of a permanent, temporary or even mobile nature and includes structures such as motels, hotels, hospitals, etc. Private Dwellings - This is a permanent or temporary dwelling which is occupied by a private household. It includes houses and flats. Permanent Private Dwelling - This refers to a dwelling that is fixed in location, of durable construction, and occupied by a private household. v Categories: - Separate house - Two flats or houses joined together - Three or more flats or houses joined together - Flat or house joined to a business or shop - Bach, crib or hut (not in a work camp) - Temporary Private Dwellings - This is a temporary or mobile dwelling occupied by a private household. Categories: - Caravan, cabin or tent in a motor camp - Other (e.g. yacht - note no further breakdown of category available) Non Private Dwellings - This is a dwelling in which a number of generally unrelated persons (either individuals or families) live. Non-Private establishments usually have common cooking and dining facilities. Such dwellings include institutions and group-living quarters, e.g. hotels, motels, hospitals, prisons, school hostels, motor camps, etc. Persons of NZ Maori Ethnic Group Resident in New Zealand - Refers to persons who stated NZ Maori as either their sole ethnic group or as one of several ethnic groups and were in NZ on census night and usually reside in NZ. Persons of NZ Maori Ancestry Resident in New Zealand - Refers to persons who have Maori ancestors, no matter how distant and were in NZ on census night and usually reside in NZ. Persons of Pacific Island Polynesian Ethnic Group Resident in NZ - Refers to persons who stated a Pacific Island Polynesian ethnic group as either their sole ethnic group or as one of several ethnic groups and were in NZ on census night and usually reside in NZ. Population Resident in Private Dwellings - Refers to persons in private dwellings on census night.
