The dramatic response by the public at large is indicative of the understandable horror with which millions of parents must view a person many believe murdered her own daughter, verdict of the trial notwithstanding. It should seem obvious that most peoples’ reac- tions are a product of humanity’s innate fascination with the innocence of youth, something we all strive to shed in our formative years only to spend the next 60 desperately wishing for a way to reclaim it.
