DEE’S DELIGHTS TEABERRY ICE CREAM, A HOME TOWN FAVORITE IT MAY BE A BIT OLD-FASHIONED, BUT IT’S A FLAVOR OF ICE CREAM THAT REMAINS A FAVORITE AMONG MANY WHO CALL THE KEYSTONE STATE HOME. I’M OF COURSE TALKING ABOUT TEABERRY, A BUBBLE-GUM PINK ICE CREAM THAT DOESN’T TASTE AT ALL LIKE TEA OR BERRIES. SO, WHAT IS TEABERRY? TEABERRY IS A SMALL RED FRUIT FOUND THROUGHOUT THE MOUNTAIN RANGES OF BOTH EASTERN AND WESTERN PA. THE BERRY USED FOR FLAVOR IS ALSO KNOWN AS THE CHECKERBERRY, BOXBERRY, AND AMERICAN WINTERGREEN. FOR THE UNINITIATED, TEABERRY IS A PECULIAR ICE CREAM FLAVOR. THE COLOR, A VIBRANTLY HAPPY SHADE OF PINK, MAKES YOU THINK OF STRAWBERRY OR ANOTHER BERRY, ESPECIALLY WITH “BERRY” AS PART OF THE NAME. BUT THERE’S NO BERRY FLAVOR AT ALL. THERE’S ALSO NO TEA FLAVOR. TEABERRY IS SWEET, A TOUCH TART, AND TASTES MUCH LIKE WINTERGREEN. IT MAKES MANY PEOPLE THINK OF CLARK’S TEABERRY GUM. IN FACT, A MAN NAMED CHARLES BURKE EXPERIMENTED WITH CHEWING GUM FLAVORS IN HIS PITTSBURGH BASEMENT. HE CONCOCTED A ROSE-PINK STICK AND SOLD THE PATENT CLARK. THE GUM AND FLAVOR BECAME IMMENSELY POPULAR IN THE ’60S AND ’70S. IF YOU LIKE WINTERGREEN, YOU’LL LOVE TEABERRY. NEXT TIME TRY A SCOOP. YOU’LL LOVE IT AS I DO. 5 THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE LEANING TOWER OF PISA BEGAN IN AUGUST 1173. IT WAS INTERRUPTED SEVERAL TIMES BY WARS AND DEBT AND WHILE ENGINEERS WORKED ON WAYS TO CORRECT THE LEAN. WE HAVE NOW LEARNED THAT THOSE INTERRUPTIONS AL- LOWED THE SOIL TO COMPRESS AND KEPT THE TOWER FROM TOP- PLING OVER. THE TOWER WAS EVENTUALLY COMPLETED IN THE MID-1300S. THE TOWER AS MEANT TO BE THE BELLTOWER FOR A GRAND CATHEDRAL COMPLEX CALLED THE “FIELD OF MIRACLES”. THE CITY OF PISA WAS A SIMPLE BUT IMPORTANT SEAPORT. AS IT GREW, THE CITY WANTED TO BUILD MORE AND LARGER RELIGIOUS BUILDINGS. THE FAME AND POWER OF THE CITY GREW AS THE CITY AND PEOPLE WERE INVOLVED IN MILITARY CONFLICTS. THE CITY OF PISA WANTED TO SHOW THE WORLD HOW IMPORTANT THEY WERE BY BUILDING THIS CATHEDRAL COMPLEX. THE REAL IDENTITY OF THE TOWER OF PISA’S ARCHITECT IS A MYSTERY. MOST ATTRIBUTE THE IDENTITY OF THE ARCHITECT FOR THE FIRST PHASE OF WORK TO BONANNO PISANO AND GHERARO DIN GHERARDO. THE SECOND PHASE OF CONSTRUCTION STARTED IN 1275 AND THE WORK IS CREDITED TO GIOVANI DI SIMONE. TAMMASO PISANO WAS THE ARCHITECT WHO FINISHED THE WORK. THE LEANING OF THE TOWER OF PISA COMES INTO THE STORY IN 1173, WHEN CONSTRUCTION BEGAN. DUE TO THE SOFT GROUND, IT HAD BEGUN TO LEAN BY THE TIME ITS BUILDERS GOT TO THE SECOND STORY IN 1178. THE SOFT GROUND CONSISTING OF CLAY, FINE SAND AND SHELLS HAD DESTABILIZED THE TOWER’S FOUNDATION. OVER THE NEXT 800 YEARS, IT BECAME CLEAR THE THE TOWER WASN’T JUST LEANING BUT WAS FALLING AT A RATE OF 1 TO 2 MILLIMETERS PER YEAR. TODAY, THE LEANING TOWER OF PISA IS MORE THAN 5 METERS OFF PERPENDICULAR! THE LEAN WAS FIRST NOTED AFTER THE THIRD STORY BEGAN TO BE BUILT. THE NEXT STORIES WERE BUILT SLIGHTLY TALLER ON THE SHORT SIDE OF THE TOWER IN AN ATTEMPT TO COMPENSATE FOR THE LEAN. HOWEVER, THE WEIGHT OF THE EXTRA FLOORS CAUSED THE EDIFICE TO SINK FURTHER AND LEAN MORE. 6 PASTOR SPRING’S THINGS BETHANY AND HANNAH GORALSKI ARE TWIN 25-YEAR-OLD SISTERS WHO EACH DONATED A KIDNEY TO SEPARATE STRANGERS EARLIER BIBLE THIS YEAR. THEIR DAD DIED OF KIDNEY FAILURE LAST YEAR BEFORE THEY HAD THE CHANCE TO DONATE TO HIM. TO HONOR HIS REMARKABLE GENEROSITY WITH OTHERS, THEY STUDY ELECTED TO GIVE LIFE TO SOMEONE ELSE. THEIR DECISION TRIGGERED A CHAIN REACTION OF ANONYMOUS KIDNEY DONATIONS FROM FRIENDS OF THE PEOPLE WHO BENEFITED FROM THEIR GIFT, AND THEN FROM FRIENDS OF OTHERS WHO HAD NEW LIFE THANKS TO THE SUCCESSION OF DONORS. IN THE END, NORTHWESTERN MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, IN CHICAGO, HELPED COORDINATE TEN DONORS AND TEN RECIPIENTS, WITH POTENTIALLY EVEN MORE TO COME. WEDNESDAYS 3:30 PM WHAT INSPIRES PEOPLE TO BEHAVE IN SUCH GENEROUS WAYS? I HAPPEN TO THINK JOY PRECEDES GENEROSITY. IT’S ACTIVITY ROOM THE DISPOSITION THAT ENABLES IT IN THE FIRST PLACE. TO HEAR BETHANY AND HANNAH GORALSKI SPEAK OF THEIR FUNNY CHURCH JOY IN DONATING A VITAL HUMAN ORGAN IS TO HEAR THEIR BULLETINS FATHER’S JOY ECHOING THROUGH THEIR LIVES. THE OLD TESTAMENT FIGURE NEHEMIAH SAID, “THE JOY OF THE LORD IS MY STRENGTH". WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE IF THAT KIND OF JOY LIVED IN ALL OF GOD'S PEOPLE? IT IS WITHIN OUR - PASTOR IS ON POWER TO DECIDE EACH DAY. VACATION. MASSAGES CAN BE GIVEN TO CHURCH SECRETARY - THE “OVER 60S CHOIR’ WILL BE DISBANDED THIS SUMMER WITH THANKS 7 7 Around fair oaKS… WE CELEBRATED THE FOURTH OF JULY IN A BIG WAY THIS YEAR.
