Acontroversyaboutnatureandnurturearoseaspsychiatricexplanations wereproposedforjuveniledelinquency,withthedebatebeingwhether inborntendencies(“nature”)aremoreorlessimportantthanenvironmental factors(“nurture”)inexplainingdeviantbehavior. (Wikipedia“The Bad Seed”) The Bad SeedwasWilliamMarch’s(1893-1954)sixth,final,andmostsuccessfulnovel. Publishedjustmonthsbeforehisdeathin1954,itwentontobeadaptedtoalong-running Broadwayplay(1954-55),a1956filmadaptationusingmuchoftheoriginalBroadwaycast, andfinallya1985televisionmovie. AhighlydecoratedWorldWarIsoldierandsuccessfulshippingcompanyexecutive, Marchwasveryinterestedinpsychology,andmanyofhisnovelsandshortstorieshadwhat criticCliftonFadimancalled“psychologicalacumen”.Hisfirstnovel,Company K,consistedof aseriesofpsychologicalsketchesofmenunderthepressureofwar.Thesesketches portrayedsoldierssubjectedtotheextremeconditionsofwar.Assuch,wecouldview Company Kasastudyof“normal”humanbehaviorwhensubjectedtoquite“abnormal” conditions.The Bad Seed,ontheotherhand,isjusttheopposite:astudyof“abnormal” マーヴィン・スミス:看護学部看護学科教授 270 Marvin SMITH behaviorunder“normal”conditions. Asmentionedinthequotationabove,therewasacontroversyinthe1950soverthe relativeimportanceof“nature”and“nurture”injuveniledelinquency.Thepurposeofthis paperisthreefold.First,I’llreviewthestoryaspresentedinthenovelThe Bad Seedand considerjustwhatstanceittakesonthenature-nurtureissuevis-à-vischildcrime.Second, I’lloutlinethehistoricalcontextofthenature-nurturedebate.Finally,I’lldiscusswhy WilliamMarch’spremiseconcerningRhodawasatoddswiththeprevailingviewsofhuman behaviorinpost-warAmerica. The Novel The Story.The Bad Seedisthestoryofeight-year-oldRhodaPenmark,whohad recentlymovedwithherfamily—herfatherKennethandhermotherChristine—toaport cityintheSouth. i)Kennethworkedforashippingcompany,and,duringalmostallofthe eventscoveredinthenovel,hewasinSouthAmericaoncompanybusiness.ThisleftRhoda andChristinetogetherinthefirst-floorapartmentofan“apartmenthouse[which]consisted ofthreefloorsofponderousVictorianelegance.”(March10)Sharingtheapartmenthousewas thewidowMrs.MonicaBreedlove,agood-naturedbusybodywhoseviewsonthehuman psycheserveasacounterpointtothecentralthesisimpliedbythenovel’stitle. Rhodawas,toalloutwardappearance,theperfectchild—achildtomakeanymother proud. Shewasinvariablepolite.Shediligentlystudied,practicedthepiano,keptherroom tidy,anddressedneatly(ifalittlebitquaintly).ShewassuchanidealchildthatChristine “wonderedfromwhatsourcethechildhadinheritedherrepose,herneatness,hercoolself- sufficiency.”(March6)Heroneflawseemedtobethatshecouldbeoverlypossessiveand covetousofthepossessionsofothers. WhenthePenmarksarrivedintheirnewhome,theyplacedRhodaintheFernSchool,a highlyrecommendedprivateschoolrunbythreesisterswhoespousedalessthanegalitarian attitudetowardsocietyandeducation:“Whileweadvocatethedemocraticideal,weare convincedthatsuchanidealispossibleonlywhereallmembersofaparticulargroupcome fromthesamelevelofsociety,preferablyahighone.”(March21)Oneofthetraditionsofthe FernSchoolwastoholdaceremonyattheendoftheschoolyearduringwhichvarious prizesandawardsweregiven:“Attheveryend,themostimportantprizeofall,intheminds The Bad Seed 271 ofthepupils,wasgiven:thegoldmedalawardedannuallytothechildwhoshowedthe greatestimprovementinpenmanshipduringtheschoolyear.”(March8)Rhodahadsether sightsonbeingtherecipientofthatyear’spenmanshipmedal.SinceRhodawasadiligentand conscientiousstudent,shefeltthatthemedalshouldrightlygotoher.Unfortunately,atthe awardsceremonyRhodadiscoveredthatthemedalhadbeenawarded“nottoherselfbuttoa thin,timidlittleboynamedClaudeDaigle.”(March8)HermotherandMrs.Breedlovetried toconsoleRhodabypointingoutthatthemedalwasnotawardedtothestudentwiththe bestpenmanship,butratherthestudentwiththemost improvedpenmanship.Thisfailedto placateher,andsheremainedinconsolable. EachyearonthefirstSaturdayofJunetheFernSchoolheldapicnic“amongtheoaksof Benedict,theoldFernsummerplaceatPelicanBay.”(March3)Itwasatthispicnicthat Rhodaattemptedtorighttheinjusticedonetoher.Onthebus,“Rhodamovedfromherseat andtookpossessionofonenearerthelittleDaigleboy.Hereyeswerefixedsteadilyonthe penmanshipmedal,butshedidnotspeakatall.”(March28)ThroughoutthebusrideRhoda badgeredClaude,askingtotouchandholdthemedal.OneoftheFernsisterslaterreported: “Shebecamesoinsistent,”saidClaudiaFern,“thatIfinallyhadtotakeher bythearmandmakehersitbyherself,upnearthedriver—asfaraway fromClaudeasIcouldgether.Buteventhenshetwistedherneckaround andlookedatthemedalthewholetime.”(March61) WhenthebusesarriveatPelicanBay,RhodacontinuedtohoundClaude,chasinghim downthebeachandoutontoanoldwharf. Backattheapartmenthouse,ChristineandMrs.Breedloveheardthenewsontheradio: ClaudeDaigle,theonlychildofMr.andMrs.DwightDaigle,hadbeenkilledattheFern Schoolpicnic.Hisbodyhadbeenfoundwedgedamongtheoldpilingsatthewharf.There werebruisesonhisforeheadandhands,butevenmoremysteriously,theannouncer continued,“Onlyafewdaysbefore,thelittleDaigleboywonagoldmedalattheclosing exercisesoftheFernSchool.Hewaswearingthemedalwhenlastseen,butwhenhisbody wasdiscovered,themedalwasnotfound.”(March45-6) AweeklaterChristinereceivedaletterfromtheFernSchool,whichsaid,inbrief,that therewouldbenoroomforRhodaintheschoolforthefallterm.WhenChristinevisitedthe 272 Marvin SMITH school,OctaviaFernstoppedshortofaccusingRhodaofanythingspecificinvolvingClaude’s death,vaguelysaying,“OurcomplaintisthatRhodaisevasive,anddidn’ttellusthewhole truth.Wefeelshehasknowledgethatshe’stoldnobody.”(March64-5)Sheconcludedby saying,“WefeelthatRhodaisnotagoodinfluenceonourotherpupils.”(March65)Although ChristinebecameverysuspiciousofRhoda’sactionsatthepicnic,whenshetalkedtoRhoda, shehadacleverexplanation/lieforanypointtheFernsistersraisedconcerningheractions. Christine“hadlittledoubtthatRhodahadworriedtheDaigleboy,orthatshehadtriedto takethemedalfromhiminthewoods,eventhoughthechildhaddeniedthesethingswith suchearnestness.”(March67)Finally,sheconcludedshewouldstandbyRhoda: Shewasnottryingtojustifyherchild,forshecouldnotcondonethethings thechildhaddone;shewasonlysayingtoherselfthatmatterswerenotso badasshehadfeared.Rhodawasherchild,andshelovedher.Itwasher dutytoprotectthechild,tomakeeveryallowanceforher,togiveherthe benefitofeverydoubt.(March67) However,whenChristinediscoveredthepenmanshipmedalhiddeninRhoda’sroomand confrontedRhoda,Rhodaagainweavedaseriesofstraight-facedliesaboutwhyshehadthe medal.ChristineagainchosetobelievethatRhodawasnot,infact,directlyresponsiblefor Claude’sdeath.Thiswouldfinallychangewhenshewitnessedsomethingwithherowneyes. ThejanitoratthePenmarks’apartmenthousewasamannamedLeroyJessup.Hewasa littleeducatedmanwhofelthimselfputuponbyhispositioninlife.Hethoughtofhimselfas intellectuallysuperiortoallaroundhim,buthis ʼintelligence’consistedprincipallyofan animal-likecunning.HewasattractedtothestrangenessofRhoda,andheenjoyedtryingto ’getarise’outofherinanywayhecould.WhenheheardthenewsofClaudeDaigle’sdeath, heimmediatelybegantoteaseRhodamercilessly,intimatingthatshewastheone responsibleforClaude’sdeath.HesuggestedthatRhodahadhitClaudewithastickandthat, whenthepolicefoundthestick,theycouldprovebythebloodtracesthatitwasthemurder weaponandthatRhodahadwieldedit.Infact,Rhodahadusedhercleatedshoestostrike Claude,andafterLeroybegantalkingaboutthestickandbloodtraces,shethrewtheshoes intotheapartmenthouseincinerator. Leroynoticedshewasnolongerwearingtheshoes, andintheensuingconversationitcameoutthatshehadthrownthemaway.Shewas,infact, asmuchasadmittingthatshehadkilledClaude.Leroyjokinglysaidthathehadretrieved themfromtheincineratorandwouldgivethemtothepolicetocheckforblood.WhenRhoda The Bad Seed 273 demandedhereturntheshoesmoreandmoreinsistently: ...hewenttothefrontofthehouse,wherehewassureshewouldnot followhim.Hestoodunderthecamphortreealone,sayingtohimselfin amazement,“Ireallybelieveshekilledthatlittleboy!”Hewasafraidofthe child.Hecametoworknextdaydeterminedtoavoidher;tohisrelief,she didnotcomeintotheparkthatmorning;butlookingupfromtimetotime, hesawheratherwindow.Allthatmorning,hewasconsciousthatshe followedhismovementswithhereyes,herheadturningfromsidetoside; andonce,lookingupquickly,theirglancesmet.Heturneduneasilyaway, awareoftheunconcealedfury,thecold,calculatingangerinthelittlegirl’s face.(March181) ItwasLeroy’shabittotakeanaponamakeshiftbedofnewspaperandexcelsior ii) inthebasementoftheapartmenthouse.Thatafternoon,justafterRhodahadboughtice creamfromtheicecreamtruck,Christinesawhertakethreebigkitchenmatchesfromthe boxabovethestove.WhatfollowedremovedanydoubtsthatChristinemayhavehadabout theguiltorinnocenceofherdaughter: Mrs.Penmarkhadmovedtothekitchenwindowtowatch,wonderingwhat thechildintendeddoingwiththematchesshe’dtaken;shedidnothave longtowonder,forRhoda,lookingcautiouslyfromsidetosidetoseethat noeyeobservedher,went,herfaceblandandinnocentagain,tothe basementdoor.Shepausedatthedoorandstruckonematchonthecement wall,shieldingtheflamewithherpalm.Shedisappearedforamomentfrom hermother’ssightasshewentontiptoesintothebasementroom.When there,shestoopedquicklyandtouchedthematchtotheexcelsiorandpiled papersofLeroy’smakeshiftbed.Shecameoutofthebasementquietly, closingthedoorbehindher.Sheslippedtheflimsyboltthatheldthedoor
