William Rainey Harper was a scholar, teacher, writer and administrator who devoted his life to the pursuit of excellence in education. He accomplished so much in his lifetime that he is counted among the intellectual giants of his day. A man of vision and an innovator, Dr. Harper was handpicked by John D. Rockefeller to become the first president of the University of Chicago before the turn of the century. During his 15-year presi- dency, that university emerged as one of the lead- ers in a movement to reform higher education.
