GIBA CONCEIÇÃO Is a Percussionist, Composer, Improviser, and Educator

GIBA CONCEIÇÃO is a Percussionist, Composer, improviser, and educator. Born in Bahia with a talent for music, Giba has developed his rhythmic creativity since adolescence. Considered today among the great drummers, Giba began his professional career in 1986 and soon received the Caymmi Award as a musician in 1987. His work is rooted in the deep mysticism of candomblé- an African tradition of religion in Brazil. His research and technical mastery instrument is the Cuica. Giba traveled extensively in Europe and USA with Margareth Menezes and played and recorded with many of the talented Brazilian artists including Gilberto Gil, Paulinho da Viola, Paulo Moura and Armandinho. During the formative years Giba helped founded Samba groups: Sexta Samba Sound, Samba Fama and played with instrumental bands: Pulsa Group, Auto Reverse, Ilú Batá and Carnival Bands. In 2001 he became part of a major research project called "Odantalan". The project accessed the cultural and spiritual heritage by uniting great musicians from Africa and the Diaspora in Luanda, Angola. Giba also worked as a professor of percussion at the Pracatum School, with Carlinhos Brown in Candeal Pequeno, Brotas (2000- 2002) and has developed workshops in Bahia, France, Austria, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, New York, Salvador, among other places, exploring the four aspects of Brazilian percussion: Candomblé, capoeira, Afro blocos and popular percussion. He has been part of the Sun Institute for Freedom of the singer Daniela Mercury, Instituto M'pumalango of Arts - the Caravan Music Project, a partnership between ESPN Brazil, Sport and Education Institute, and UNICEF, which is a movement of social action by educational for sports and art. Giba also participated in the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Music Festival trough Foudation and a Community Arts grant, from the City of New Orleans, administered by the Arts Council of New Orleans, it is produced by Musicians for Music and the New Orleans Museum of Art. .
