The album quickly manifested Metheny’s jazz career as he offered the music scene a new Americana sound with his blend of mid- Feb 26 western country, hymns, blues and understated harmony. Exploring and celebrat- 20.00 (8pm) ing the music of Pat Metheny are the Danish stellar musicians Niels Ryde (bass), Jørgen Emborg (keys) and Anders Mogensen (drums). Swedish Bjarne Roupé picks DKK 295 up the guitar as he has done many times before when collaborating with Miles Da- vis, Dizzy Gillespie, Johnny Griffin and John Scofield among many others. THE ICONIC ALBUM THAT CHANGED JAZZ FOREVER THURSDAY KIND OF BLUE - TRIBUTE TO MILES Mar 03 20.00 (8pm) Gerard Presencer (trumpet / UK), Phil Markowitz (piano / US), Peter Fuglsang (alto sax / DK) Tomas Franck (tenor sax / SE), Jesper Lundgaard (bass / DK), Niclas Bardeleben (drums / DK) DKK 440 Miles Davis’ masterpiece Kind of Blue stands as the best selling instrumental jazz album of all time. With this album Miles delivered a soundtrack to so many lives across age and time, and his work is widely acknowledged as some of the most in- fluential music on other genres such as rock and classical, besides of course laying the ground stones for the cool jazz movement in jazz itself. At Jazzhus Montmartre we have put together a great tribute group of some of the best across age, back- ground and geography. Of newcomers to Montmartre we are especially excited to present Gerard Presencer, Phil Markowitz and Peter Fulgsang. And we welcome back T. Franck, Lundgaard and Bardeleben. Ps. Remember the Cantaloop song by US3? Yep, that is Presencer playing the famous trumpet lines! ONE NIGHT ONLY! FRIDAY PHIL MARKOWITZ TRIO Mar 04 20.00 (8pm) Phil Markowitz (piano / US), Jesper Lundgaard (bass / DK), Alex Riel (drums / DK) DKK 350 Phil Markowitz is well-known within music circles, not only as a brilliant pianist but also an amazing composer and arranger too, thus the many collaborations with other great artists such as Joe Lovano, Eddie Gomez, and Michael Brecker. A story goes that Bill Evans by coincidence heard Markowitz’ composition Sno’ Peas while performing together with Toots Thielemans. Bill then asked Toots to bring the song to a recording session, and this version would later end up on Bill Evan’s Grammy-nominated album Affinity, thereby manifesting Markowitz as a prominent composer. As sideman he has worked with Chet Baker’s Band, been a member of the Dave Liebman Group and the Bob Mintzer’s Big Band. But for one night only at Jazzhus Montmartre we get to experience his musical knowledge as leader when he invites two great Danes, Jesper Lundgaard and Alex Riel, to join him on the stage. THE AMAZING PIANIST FROM THE MICHAEL BRECKER BAND AND SATURDAY BRANDFORD MARSALIS QUARTET! Mar 05 JOEY CALDERAZZO TRIO FEAT. 20.00 (8pm) CHRIS MINH DOKY & JUKKIS UOTILA DKK 395 Joey Calderazzo (piano / US), Chris Minh Doky (bass / DK), Jukkis Outila (drums / FI) Joey Calderazzo’s name became known worldwide in the 1990s as a member of the Michael Brecker Band and he quickly built a strong reputation for his ability to put instantly on fire any band that he is a member of (he later became a member of the Branford Marsalis Quartet). His long association with Michael Brecker lasted through multiple editions of the latter’s band, including the one that included Dan- ish bass star Chris Minh Doky - with whom Joey Calderazzo has had a long standing friendship and musical relationship, and who is joining him on stage tonight. Also on stage will be the spectacular drummer Jukkis Uotila, one of the most prolific and highly respected jazz artists to ever emerge out of Finland, and whom we, like Joey, greatly welcome tonight for their first appearance at the Montmartre. Don’t miss this incredible trio – one night only! VOTED BEST VIBES PLAYER THURSDAY DAVE SAMUELS TRIO Mar 10 FEATURING VINDING AND RIEL 20.00 (8pm) DKK 320 Dave Samuels (vibraphone / US), Mads Vinding (bass / DK), Alex Riel (drums / DK) FRIDAY He has been voted ‘Best Vibes Player’ in both Jazziz and Modern Drummer maga- Mar 11 zines, and performed and recorded with a broad scope of artists, among many 20.00 (8pm) Oscar Peterson, Chet Baker, Pat Metheny, the Yellowjackets, Frank Zappa and Spyro Gyra. During his long time association with Spyro Gyra the Grammy –nominated DKK 320 group was named #1 Contemporary Jazz Artist and Jazz Group of the 80’s by SATURDAY Billboard magazine and with his own group The Carribean Jazz Project he has re- ceived the Latin Grammy. His current project involves the astounding team of Mads Mar 12 Vinding on bass and Alex Riel on drums, with their CD release of ‘Summer Night’ in 20.00 (8pm) March. This also means that he will finally be coming to Montmartre to demonstrate his versatile playing and the fresh and creative sound he is known for. We look for- DKK 320 ward to three spellbinding nights at Montmartre! ITALY’S EXTRAORDINARY JAZZ VOCAL SENSATION THURSDAY ALICE RICCIARDI Mar 17 20.00 (8pm) Alice Ricciardi (vocal / IT), Pietro Lussu (piano / IT), Jesper Lundgaard (bass / DK), Morten Lund (drums / DK) DKK 325 FRIDAY For the third time Alice Ricciardi returns to the Montmartre stage with her warm and compelling voice. Italy may be mostly known for its classical Mar 18 contribution to music history, but make no mistake when it comes to jazz. 20.00 (8pm) This lady has a solid heritage in the great Italian love and life stories, and she brings it alive in a new and sophisticated way that indeed swings. Alice DKK 325 Ricciardi has already played at the prestigious Jazz at Lincoln Center’s in SATURDAY NY, The Cotton Club in Tokyo and at Montreux Jazz Festival and in 2008 she debuted from Blue Note with the critical acclaimed album Comes Love. Mar 19 As always, she is bringing her own and fantastic pianist Pietro Lussu, and 20.00 (8pm) from Denmark she is supported by the always amazing Jesper Lundgaard on bass and one of our top favorite drummers here at the Montmartre, the DKK 325 incredible Morten Lund. COOL JAZZ LEGEND THURSDAY FRIDAY LEE KONITZ NEW QUARTET Mar 24 Mar 25 20.00 (8pm) 20.00 (8pm) Lee Konitz (alto sax / US), Florian Weber (piano / DE), Ziv Ravitz (drums / IL), Jeff Denson (bass / US) DKK 350 DKK 350 SATURDAY SUNDAY Lee Konitz is one of the most influential also saxophonists, especially in the early development of modern jazz, where Konitz succeeded Mar 26 Mar 27 in bringing the harmonic ideas of Charlie Parker into his own playing, 20.00 (8pm) 20.00 (8pm) yet in a markedly different fashion with more evenness of tones and length of melodies in his phrases. Soon after he would hook up with DKK 350 DKK 350 Miles Davis in his nine-piece band and the Birth of the Cool project, where they played each other off. It is these early influences and col- laborations that have made Konitz regarded as one of the architects and driving forces of cool jazz. Lee Konitz is touring with his New Quartet and we are deeply honoured and excited about their visit to Montmartre, especially since Konitz also used to visit the Montmartre in its first 1959-1976 era. We can’t wait to see what music and memo- ries will come alive on the stage. NEXT GENERATION JAZZ WIZARD THURSDAY AN EVENING WITH Mar 31 20.00 (8pm) CHARLIE HUNTER DKK 325 Charlie Hunter (guitar / US), Scott Amendola (drums/ US) FRIDAY Charlie Hunter calls himself a ‘boutique’ artist because of his, in many ways Apr 01 pragmatic choice of band constellations. Yet, one thing critics keep prais- 20.00 (8pm) ing is his own modern jazz style niche in which you can find all kinds of traces from R&B, funk, rock, Brazilian, etc. And the contradictions continue DKK 325 when he picks up his custom made 7-string guitar and plays bass, melody SATURDAY and rhythm at the same time. One would think it would be a struggle to handle what seems to be only differences. But watching him surrounded Apr 02 by music it all comes together as low-key virtuosity in the most alive sense; 20.00 (8pm) Charlie Hunter is a world class skilled guitarist, and down to earth relaxed DKK 325 as an artist. No wonder the jazz community is always awaiting his next move. We can reveal it is Jazzhus Montmartre, and he is bringing with him his long-time and much talented cohort Scott Amendola on drums!
