Last year’s champion Leonardo Mayer (d. Ferrer) is not defending his title. Day 1 Preview: Day one at the bet-at-home Open in Hamburg features four singles matches and two doubles matches. Players in singles action include the German wildcard Florian Mayer, former World No. 9 Nicolas Almagro and all four qualifiers. In doubles the top seeds Simon Bolelli / Fabio Fognini square off against the Spanish wildcard tandem of Jaume Munar / Rafael Nadal. Nadal Top Seed: World No. 10 and 2008 champion Rafael Nadal accepted a wild card into Hamburg and he is making his fourth tournament appearance, the first since capturing the title seven years ago (d. Federer). He also reached the final in ’07 (l. to Federer). Nadal has an 11-2 career record in Hamburg. The 29-year-old Spaniard is playing in his first tournament since falling to Dustin Brown in the 2nd Round at Wimbledon on July 2. Nadal has a 34-12 match record on the season with titles in Buenos Aires in February (d. Monaco) and Stuttgart last month (d. Troicki). Rafa on Clay: Nadal comes in with a 21-6 match record on clay this season with his best result a 46th career clay title in Buenos Aires in February (d. Monaco). He also advanced to the final at ATP Masters 1000 Madrid (l. to Murray) and the semi-finals in Rio de Janeiro and ATP Masters 1000 Monte-Carlo. His 39-match winning streak at Roland Garros came to an end with his quarter-final loss to Djokovic. Nadal is looking to extend his streak of having won at least one European clay court title every year since 2004 when he captured his maiden ATP World Tour crown in Sopot. Germans in Field: There are three Germans in the main draw (not including qualifiers), led by Philipp Kohlschreiber, who is making his 11th tournament appearance (10-10). His best result was the semi-finals last year (l. to L. Mayer). Other Germans in the field are wild cards Florian Mayer and 18-year-old Alexander Zverev, who last year reached his maiden ATP World Tour semi-final in his hometown tournament. The last German winner was Michael Stich in 1993. Let’s Meet Again: No. 2 seed Robredo and Zverev will meet in the 1R after playing each other in the semi-finals in Bastad on Saturday (Robredo won 63 64). In another rematch from last week, No. 3 Bautista Agut and another teenager, Borna Coric, play again. Last week in Umag, the Spaniard won the QF match 64 64.
