My sister and I devoured all children’s storybooks as if they were candy, but the mystery, whimsy and fantasy of Roald Dahl was always a special treat! We loved creating amusing voices for the characters or acting them out during long car rides. But as a director of theater, the bold reality of putting Dahl’s fantastical story and whimsical characters on the stage becomes a whole new challenge, or shall I say a whole new treat. When I chose to direct Willy Wonka, I began by breaking the story into the two main worlds Dahl created – the world of Charlie Bucket and the world of Willy Wonka. Charlie’s world is one of exaggerated realism: poverty, humor, com- passion, greed and other raw realities on a heightened scale (a world far too familiar today). Willy Wonka’s world is one of abstract fantasy: amazement, mystery, awe and bewilderment in the form of things only found in dreams. Every director who approaches the Willy Wonka story brings their own artistic interpretation. They’ve either read the book, watched the 1971 movie version implanting an image of the Oompa Loompas in their head forever, or rented the Tim Burton version, loving or hating his Mr. Wonka. The journey to those artistic interpretations is not an easy one. Today we will not present you an imitation of someone else’s depiction. We will take you on our own journey, a journey through shape and color, through character and movement, an adven- ture through exaggerated realism and abstract fantasy. And on that journey we hope to uplift you, offer you a golden ticket to a world found in dreams, and encourage you to share that joy with the rest of the world. -Erik Austin 2015 SPECIAL THANKS TO Peter Finlayson, FootLights, Alex Allan, Jennifer Bloomfield El Portal Theatre, Pegge Forrester, Jay Irwin, Madilyn Clark Rehearsal Studios, Costume Capers, Keith Wetzel, Kathleen Forster, Buffy Doran, Bruce Hunter, Debi Hernandez, Gloria Galetka & All the Parents of Cast Children CORPORATE SPONSORS Central Coast Family News, Costume Capers, SLO Children’s Museum, GC Photography, Ethereal FX, Cheap Thrills, Cortez Photography Many Thanks to Our Generous Sponsors!
