Indeed, the top-priced foal of this year’s sale came in the shape of the Robin Des Champs colt (Lot 889) from Hillview Stud. A full- brother to the Jack Barber-trained winning point-to-pointer Matters Judge John Deed, this colt was the subject of a battle between Brendan Bashford and trainer Ian Ferguson. The latter bought this gelding’s brother for €48,000 during the yearling section of this auction last year, while he also picked up the subsequent star novice hurdler Yorkhill for €41,000 as a foal Euro at this sale a number of years ago. Having been beaten for another Robin Des Champs a few minutes previously, Ferguson was not to be denied and he succeeded when bringing the price to €70,000. up 28% “We missed out on the other Robin Des Champs, but we were pleased to get this colt.
