Physical Health Compass takes the hard work out of finding local, low-cost and low-impact physical activities to support healthy ageing. Activities are scheduled at a variety of locations across the Sunshine Coast & Gympie regions and include aqua fitness, dancing, gentle exercise, strength & stability, tai chi, qigong, walking and yoga. These activities were selected, as evidence suggests they improve balance, flexibility, stamina, mobility, coordination and strength. Point your health in the right direction Evidence shows that getting physically active at any stage of life, can improve health and prevent major illness. Adults that are active on a regular basis, enjoy longer and more independent lives, compared to inactive adults. Benefits of regular physical activity • Improved fitness, endurance, strength, balance, flexibility and mobility • Reduced risk of falls • Feeling and looking fitter • Increased self confidence • Prevention of disease • Improved management of diabetes, arthritis, pain, weight and blood pressure • Improved mental health and sleep How much physical activity is needed for health benefits? • Accumulate 150-300 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity each week (e.g. 30-60mins, 5 days/week) or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous physical activity each week, or an equivalent combination of both Top Tips • Doing any physical activity is better than doing none • Be active on most, preferably all days every week • Do muscle strengthening activities on at least 2 days each week • Gradually build up to recommended amounts of physical activity • Minimise the amount of time spent in prolonged sitting • Break up long periods of sitting as often as possible PHYSICAL HEALTH COMPASS – Sunshine Coast & Gympie Region, developed by the Sunshine Coast Hospital & Health Service 5 S U N S H I N E C O A S T PHYSICAL HEALTH COMPASS – Sunshine Coast & Gympie Region, developed by the Sunshine Coast Hospital & Health Service 6 AQUA FITNESS – SUNSHINE COAST Water-based exercise conducted in waist to chest deep pools.
