She was in service from 1936 to 1967 and primarily operated on the trans-Atlantic route, serving as Cunard’s flagship from 1936 until 1946. RMS Queen Mary sailed on her maiden voyage on May 27th 1936 and had achieved the Blue Riband by August; holding it for the majority of the next 15 years. During World War II she was converted into a troopship carrying soldiers from both America, Australia and New Zealand to the United Kingdom. Following a major refurbishment she returned to passenger services after the war but with the advent of the jet engine and her increasing age she was retired in 1967. RMS Queen Mary departed Southampton on her final voyage on October 31st 1967 to the port of Long Beach, California, where she remains moored to this day. 1936 Maiden Voyage SHP003 £50 Sanders cover, Southampton postmark. With the outbreak of war she entered service in 1940 as a troopship and it was not until October 1946 that she served in her intended role as an ocean liner operating between Southampton and New York. Named in honour of Queen Elizabeth, the then Queen Consort to King George VI, she was the largest passenger liner ever built, a title held for 56 years. She was replaced by Queen Elizabeth 2 in 1969 and ending up being sold to a Hong Kong businessman but she caught fire and capsized whilst undergoing refurbishments in Hong Kong harbour. 1946 Maiden Voyage SHP004 £50 Sanders cover with Southampton postmark.
