The Course will focus on key UK nuclear legislation and legal issues; we hope it will be practical, informative and interactive. The Conference is designed for INLA members – lawyers and specialist nuclear lawyers practising in the public and private sector, policy makers, regulators and students. It provides an ideal introduction for newcomers to the UK nuclear legal sector, as well as benefitting the more experienced practitioners. He is an expert in the field of nuclear regulation and international nuclear law and has advised extensively on commercial arrangements in the nuclear sector around the world. Ian chairs the Nuclear Industry Association's Legal and Financial Affairs Working Group, and also acts as the UK representative on the board of the International Nuclear Law Association with whom he has been actively involved since 1999. He is editor of 'The Burges Salmon Guide to Nuclear Law' (Second edition 2015). Dr Tim Stone CBE Tim is the Chairman of Nuclear Risk Insurers and is also the longest serving member of the Board of the European Investment Bank. He is a non-executive member of the Arup Group Board and a non-executive director of both Horizon Nuclear Power board and of the Site Licence Company. From 2011 –2015 he was a non-executive director of the Anglian Water Group. He is, or has been, a member of a number of advisory boards for infrastructure investors, funds and advisory firms. He was the one foreign member of the Expert Advisory Committee of the Royal Commission on the Nuclear Fuel Cycle established in 2015 by the government of South Australia. Until 2013, Tim was the Expert Chair of the Office for Nuclear Development in DECC and the Senior Advisor to successive Secretaries of State responsible for energy. He served five different Secretaries of State in two different governments over nearly 7 years. He holds a Visiting Professorship at University College London. Chair Andrew Carr, Andrew has been a solicitor with the company since 1999 when he joined BNFL Sellafield Ltd Group Legal at Risley. He took up the executive role of General Counsel for Sellafield Ltd in 2007 and was appointed to the Board as Company Secretary in April 2016. Andrew is a specialist nuclear regulatory lawyer with significant experience of managing legal issues at a national and international level throughout the nuclear fuel cycle. Andrew’s responsibilities include leading the provision of specialist legal advice and insurance support to the business, supporting the Board with corporate governance and compliance and being the executive lead for Hinton House in Warrington. Nick Atherton, Sellafield Nick is a Technical Manager for Sellafield Ltd leading the development of the Ltd Sellafield Site End States programme. Nick started his career in the brownfield redevelopment industry, where he led the remediation of a number of International Nuclear Law Association industrial and military sites. He has worked in the Nuclear Industry for 15 years, across a variety of sites. Nick is an Environmental Scientist, and a Chartered Environmentalist. Part of his current role is to lead the Environmental Science research programme to support decommissioning, waste management and site remediation at Sellafield. Nick also chairs an inter- industry group that supports the NDA research programme for site remediation and reports into the Nuclear Waste and Decommissioning Research Forum. Helen Peters, Pinsent Helen is an environmental and nuclear law specialist. She has over 20 years’ Masons experience having retrained as a lawyer after a degree incorporating environmental science and working as an advisor to the National Farmers Union. She is recognised as a leading UK Environmental Lawyer by Chambers Legal Directory and Legal 500 and was a member of the Committee of Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM) between 2012 and 2016, a group of independent experts appointed by the UK Government providing scrutiny and advice on higher activity radioactive waste. Helen is currently a member of the BEIS Working Group advising on modernising legislative controls for nuclear sites in the final stages of decommissioning.
