The “Rahab” of (Ps 87:4; 89:10; Is 30:7; 51:9) means “dragon” and is not the same “Rahab” we are discussing. I. WHAT THE O. T. SAYS ABOUT RAHAB A. Her Character. 1. Bible uses the word “Harlot” (Josh. 2:1; 6:17, 25). 2. Other sources say she was also an “Inn Keeper,” “Linen Maker” (because of the flax & scarlet thread), and an “Artisan of dyeing cloth.” 3. The word “harlot” in the Heb. & GK. means just that, “harlot.” B. Her Works 1. She stood against the kings men sending them off on a wild goose chase, and hid the spies. 2. She orchestrated not only the protection of the spies, but also their escape (Josh. 2:4, 15-16). C. Her Faith. 1. She understood the work and sovereignty of God (2:9). 2. She had a simple faith. She risked her life and her families by hiding God’s men (2:11). D. Her Request. 1. Simply that when the Israelites invaded, that they would spare her and her families lives (2:12-13). 2. “All that they have” = their children 3. The spies answer is in (v. 14). [1] E. Her Token. 1. The scarlet cord (2:12, 15, 18, 21). 2. Note two things. a. A reminder of the Passover (Ex. 12:7, 21, 23). b. Illustration of the sin of Rahab covered by the blood (Is. 1:18; 1 Cor. 5:7; Heb. 9:22). F. Her Salvation (Josh. 6:17, 22, 23, 25). 1. All of Jericho was destroyed except her house. 2. This was nothing short of a miracle of God. II. WHAT THE N. T. SAYS ABOUT RAHAB A. The Continuation of Her Faith (Mat. 1:5). 1. She married Salmon – some think he could have been one of the spies. 2. Her son’s name – Boaz a. Ruth married Boaz and had Obed – Rahab’s grandson. b. Obed’s son was Jesse – Rahab’s great-grandson. c. Jesse’s son was David – Rahab’s great-great grandson. d. Eventually, Christ would be born. B. The Confirmation of Her Faith. 1. Mentioned in the “Hall of Faith” (Heb. 11:31). Besides Sarah, Rahab is the only other woman mention in the “Hall of Faith.” 2. Mentioned in (James 2:25) as being justified by her works. Her faith justified her and her works justified her faith. [2] .
